We were first introduced to the Anzellans in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. As the Resistance races to discover a long-lost Sith secret, they seek the skills of a Droidmith on Kijimi. Here they meet Babu Frik; he and his fellow Anzellans are famed for their skilled work with Droids. The character proved an instant hit, and further members of the Anzellan species made a comedic appearance in the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian and the animated Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. Their latest appearance will be in Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu. This is also the inspiration for this upcoming LEGO Star Wars set, which includes the diminutive Droidsmith’s starship.

With The Mandalorian & Grogu set to hit cinemas next month, it’s unclear how big a role the Anzellans and their ship play in the overall story. But the miniature alien engineers appear in two of the upcoming sets based on the film. As a small species, the Anzellans don’t need a hefty starship to get around. Instead, they travel the galaxy in a rather compact little ship. It’s quite different to most of the common Star Wars ships, in that it’s quite ‘boxy’. The exterior features some unique angles, which make the build experience quite interesting. The greebling is also quite cool, in particular on the ship’s side panels and the large plate used for the roof. This can be removed to access the ship’s interior. As with many Star Wars ships, its outer shell is mostly grey, but this is broken up with flashes of yellow. It will be interesting to see how bright those sections are on the ship once the film is out.
The highlight of the set is its interior. Thanks to the ship’s configuration, the internal space is quite roomy, and this allows it to feature a lot of detail. Much of the space is used for the Anzellan’s workshop. It’s filled with tools, Droid parts, and a little control console. Towards the front of the ship, you’ll find two transparent canopies. These form the ship’s cockpit, but only the upper canopy is functional, with enough room beneath it two seat two Anzellans.
The set doesn’t include a single regular minifigure; instead, it features three unique character figures. These include Grogu and two Anzellans. Grogu has been upgraded for these newest sets. It still uses the same head as previous versions, but now uses a new body piece. This is a better representation of the character and also allows for some variants. Here, the body includes a printed plate of Beskar armour. This is the most common version of Grogu, with the same version found in two other sets. Despite Babu Frik’s popularity, the character only made his LEGO debut in last year’s Advent Calendar. The same element is reused here for the two nameless Anzellans. These are both unique, featuring slightly different print detail and different coloured clothing. (Please note non-armoured Grogu and Baba Frik figures are not included in this set).
Although it’s not officially considered one of the set’s minifigures, there are enough parts included in the set to create a Battle Droid. This uses the usual parts needed to create a clanker, but in mismatched colours.
It’s nice to see a new ship featured in the LEGO Star Wars range. But because it’s something new, it may not appeal to the wider (and vocal) LEGO Star Wars fanbase. The lack of minifigures may also dissuade some, despite getting three unique characters. But the biggest ‘put off’ will be the set’s price. It’s quite a small ship, but it has a high RRP. Despite its packing in a lot of detail, it does feel a little too expensive for what it offers. Thankfully, it’s not as bad as The Marvel’s ship from a few years ago. Overall, it’s just a cool little ship, which includes some great interior details, three great characters and plenty of ‘swooshability’. The Anzellans Starship set blasts off on April 26th and is available to pre-order now.
