Back in 2020, the LEGO® Star Wars theme introduced a sub-theme called the Helmet Collection. It’s one of several product lines focused towards adult LEGO fans and joins the likes of the long-running Ultimate Collector Series and newer sub-themes including the Starship Collection and the Diorama Collection. Several different characters had their headwear transformed into displayable sets. Despite not releasing any sets in 2024, the Helmet Collection is back with a new entry, the AT-AT Driver Helmet. Here’s a closer look at the upcoming set.

The Empire Strikes Back is considered one the best of the Star Wars films. Released in 1980, the second Star Wars film opens on the ice planet Hoth. Rebel forces are entrenched in the secret base when their location is discovered by the Empire. Soon Echo Base is being descended upon by a group of AT-AT walkers. Like many aspects of the Imperial Navy, those operating the Imperial Walkers have unique armour. The AT-AT drivers have a similar helmet to the TIE Pilot in that it’s bulkier than a standard Stormtrooper helmet but shares similar traits.
All of the Helmet Collection sets share a display stand. Not only does this offer a uniform design across the range, but the stand is often portable if the core is to each build. That’s the case with this set. The stand section is used as a connection point for some of the sections which become the exterior of the helmet. It also features a printed plaque, featuring the LEGO Star Wars logo and the name of the set.
With each section added, the helmet becomes more detailed. The use of the chunky quarter bricks on the top part of the helmet gives it a great finish. These elements have stickers on them but at least they are easy to apply. Some of the previous sets have had fiddly tiny decals to apply. Despite the helmet being mostly grey, those stickered pieces and some of the additional elements used to finish off the helmet give it a far more interesting appearance.
Unique headwear is such an integral part of the Star Wars universe, that they now feature in the opening intros to Star Wars series on Disney+. Yet, not all helmets are suitable for replication with LEGO bricks. Those who tend to result in better sets come from the Imperial ranks or those who tend to align with them. So far the Empire’s finest have inspired Helmet Collection sets including a Stormtrooper, Scout Trooper and a TIE Pilot. These are iconic characters but the monochromatic nature of these helmets does make them appear a little unexciting. The AT-AT Driver helmet is by far the best of not only the Imperial-focused sets but the entire Helmet Collection. The AT-AT Driver Helmet Collection set is available to pre-order now ahead of its release on March 1st.
