The Star Wars universe is full of all sorts of fantastical technically, but mechs aren’t too common in a galaxy far, far away. Nor are any of the galaxies’ most famous faces pottering around in them. However, the LEGO Group does enjoy mech, and so in 2023, Star Wars mechs were introduced. Vader, Boba Fett and a Stormtrooper were all given their themed mech suits. Luke also swapped his X-Wing for a mech suit inspired by the iconic ship. Now it’s the turn of Darth Maul to climb into a mech for the latest LEGO Star Wars mech suit set.

The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy and the era which surrounds it are looked upon more favourably these days. Characters introduced during that trio of films have gone on to become fan favourites. Darth Maul’s journey from a cool-looking bad guy sliced in half to a feared Crime Lord has been quite interesting. The love for the character is probably why he has become the latest Star Wars character to climb into a themed mech suit.
As with the other Star Wars mechs, it uses a unique element for the base of the build. This is quite a rare piece as it’s only been used for a handful of sets. Another unique piece is the printed tile attached to the chest plate of the mech. This features a pattern similar to Maul’s ceremonial tattoos. The rest of the mech is inspired by Maul’s cybernetic augments. So the legs are more mechanical-looking, whilst the upper part feels more attuned to Maul’s natural appearance. Maul is known for his dual-bladed lightsaber, and his mech also includes one. This clips into his right hand. A minifigure scale one is also included and can be clipped onto the back of the mech, where you’ll also find a probe droid.
The minifigure included in the set is technically unique. The legs and torso are the same as those in set 75310. This shows the Sith Lord in his post-Phantom Menace days, where he’s gained mechanical legs after a workplace accident. Although these are the same, Maul’s head is slightly different as his eyes lack the black pupils. The change to some eyes was made in 2023, and of course, it caused heated discussions.
Star Wars mech suits may seem odd to some Star Wars fans, but for the audience they are intended for, what’s cooler than a mech suit? Yes, it would have been nice if it contained a unique minifigure, but not every set needs to cater for AFOLs or collectors. There should be more Star Wars mech, and it’s obvious which character needs to step into a mech next, General Kenobi. A Clone Wars Kenobi Jedi mech would be a great companion to Maul’s mech. The LEGO Star Wars Darth Maul Mech drops on June 1st.
