71853: Jay’s Dragon Mech Fight Quick Look

NINJAGO is one of several LEGO® themes to offer easy-to-build 4+ sets. These simpler sets bridge the gap between DUPLO sets and standard System ones. The 4+ sets allow younger kids to hone their building skills with bigger elements and simple instructions. One of the latest NINJAGO 4+ sets was released earlier this month and is inspired by the Dragons Rising storyline. Here’s a quick look at what the set has to offer.

The set includes two mini mechs, each inspired by the two characters found in the set. The ‘Starter’ bricks are unique leg pieces. These are single pieces which click into the body of each mech with a connected Technic pin. Jay’s mech legs are the most unique as they are styled to look like creature feet. Jay’s mech also uses a trio of golden leaf-like elements. They are hard to describe, but they are around the same sort of size as a standard lead element and have feather-like tips. However you’d describe them, they are a cool new piece only found in two other sets. The green mech appears a little less detailed than Jay’s, but I like how it expands upon its monstrous pilot mutation with green tentacles extending from the back of the seat where the minifigure is placed.

The two minifigures offer the usual good vs bad. So, ninja Jay is facing off against the Mutation Monster. Jay is featured in his ‘dragon’ form. Due to the simpler nature of the set, this lacks the wings and tail but does feature the dragon hood. The Mutation Monster is a cool minifigure; in place of the stand minifigure head, the bigger style head is used; it also has one transparent green arm.

Despite the cool minifigure and interesting parts, the price is an issue. It doesn’t feel like it reflects what the set has to offer. That being said, there’s a single Mech 4+ set available, which is half price. So a set featuring two mechs would naturally be double the price. However, that single mech set also includes three minifigures. If this set were a little cheaper, it would feel like a better value. But it is great to see fun 4+ sets, which allow younger kids to enjoy the LEGO build experience. Jay’s Dragon Me h Fight set is available now.
