It’s been 70 years since the LEGO Group introduced the System in Play. This simple idea had a vision to unite every LEGO® element, so that a brick made in 1955 would still be fully compatible with one made today. Regardless of when a set was released or what the set was based on, the System in Play remains the heart of the LEGO Group’s portfolio of brick-based products. The System In Play was created by Godtfred Kirk Christiansen after a chance meeting with a toy buyer at a UK trade fair. After a period of development, the first set to adhere to the new play system was the Town Plan. Now 70 years on, all past, current and future LEGO elements are engineered so they can be used together. It’s so important to the core values of the LEGO brand that when the company strayed from it by trying to compete with action figures and electronic toys, it almost caused the LEGO Group to become bankrupt.
