Up-scaled LEGO® minifigures were first introduced with a Harry Potter set in 2021. Since then, several sets have been released inspired by the same concept. These have included brick-built minifigures inspired by their smaller counterparts, such as a racer, Santa and a pirate. But there’s one minifigure which fans have been keen to see get the up-scaled treatment – a Classic Space astronaut. Those wishes have been answered with the upcoming up-scaled minifigure, inspired by a classic blue astronaut minifigure from the many different space sets released in the 70s and 80s. Here’s a look at the Up-scaled Blue Astronaut minifigure.

The Up-scaled Minifigures are around 6 times bigger than the standard minifigures they are based on. The build begins with the torso, and if you’ve built any of the previous up-scaled sets, the base design is the same across all of the sets. This is also the case with the arms and legs. But the build differs slightly thanks to the inclusion of the astronaut’s air tanks. These are built separately from the body but neatly slot into the back of the minifigure, with the bracket around the neck being built into the body.
The overall design of a classic space minifigure is quite basic. But the two bits of detail it does have are added via printed pieces. These include the face and the panel on the torso featuring the Classic Space logo. The legs and arms can be moved as they do on the smaller minifigures. The only part which can’t be moved is the head, instead this part of the minifigures hides something else. Within the head is a small control room. Here you’ll find a couple of printed console bricks and room for a retro robot. This is styled to match the appearance of the various bots found in the original space sets, but uses the colours of the blue astronauts. It’s a fun extra, but I’m sure a minifigure would have been better appreciated.
After all these years, the love of the Classic Space theme has remained strong, and the LEGO Group has leaned into this by expanding the ranks of Classic Space astronauts with new colours to complement the original white, red, yellow and of course blue ones featured in the early ‘classic’ space sets. Despite the blue astronaut becoming the face of the theme, partly thanks to Benny the spaceman from The LEGO Movie, the up-scaled minifigure doesn’t include his smaller muse. It’s not the first large minifigure to forgo a smaller one, but it’s a shame one hasn’t been included here. Especially as it would be an even bigger draw for fans. Despite the lack of minifigure, something is endearing about the Up-scaled Minifigures, and it’s great to finally see their ranks include a Classic Space Astronaut. It could be considered lazy to create more Up-scaled Astronaut sets in additional colours, but they would be extremely popular. The Up-scaled (or Scaled-up, as it’s titled on the box) Blue Astronaut Minifigure will be available from March 1st.
