40773: The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic GWP Review

Continuing a recent tradition of offering a unique GWP set with a larger-scale LEGO® Ideas, the upcoming Goonies set with also be accompanied by a bonus promotional build. The GWP set is inspired by the attic in the Walshes’ house, where the Goonies embark on their adventure to find One-Eyed Willy’s treasure. The attic is filled with museum artefacts, including a map leading to the fabled pirate treasure. If the Goon Dock kids never ventured into the attic, their iconic 80s adventure would never have begun. That space has now been transformed into a companion to the upcoming LEGO Ideas set inspired by The Goonies. Here’s a look around The Walshes’ Attic.

The Goonies is part of a golden era of films produced by Amblin. The production company headed by legendary director, Steven Spielberg is behind many iconic movies such as Gremlins, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Jaws and Indiana Jones, to name but a few. Interestingly, each of those films has inspired other LEGO sets. But the key to all those films is embarking on a wild adventure, which is perfect inspiration for a LEGO set. The main set covers many iconic moments from the film, but the GWP expands upon those with two additional characters and several Easter Eggs connected to the Goonies’ adventures.

The set features a small slice of the attic that appears early on in The Goonies. Although only a small area, it manages to pack in a lot of little details. The structure itself includes a wall and the slope of the roof. This gives it an interesting dimension.

Like most attics, it’s filled with various forgotten items. As noted by the characters in the film, it appears that many of the items found in the Walshes’ attic originated from the museum. In the chaotic scene, the kids find several items related to the local legend of long-lost pirate treasure. Many of these are featured in the set via stickered elements. These include the framed map leading the Goonies to One-Eyed Willy’s treasure, a newspaper article about fellow explorer, Chester Cobblepot and the painting used by Mouth to offer Mikey a ‘nice, wet, lickery kiss’. One unique part of the set is the printed tile featuring The Goonies logo.

The main set already features most of the movie’s main so none of them reappear in this set. Instead, it includes Mikey’s parents, Mr and Mrs Walsh. Both make use of torsos from the Harry Potter sets. Mrs Walsh even includes a plaster cast on her arm to partly replicate her injured arm. Although the two characters make sense in terms of the location of the set, Mr Walsh only appears very briefly and never at Mikey’s home. Swapping him for Rosalina would have been a better option.

Unlike some of the other GWP sets offered with some of the recent Ideas sets and the huge Death Star, this set isn’t an expansion of the main set. Many feel those sorts of sets should be part of the main set, which I understand. But I don’t think that’s the case here. Apart from the stickered pieces and the Goonies tile, the set would be easy to replicate with existing pieces. It’s just a nice bonus to have, should you be picking up the excellent Goonies set. As that is another expensive set, it’s only right that you get some extra. The Walshes’ attic GWP will be available to Insiders from November 1st, before it’s available to all from November 4th, when purchasing the LEGO Ideas The Goonies set.
