31217: The Fauna Collection – Tiger Set Review

The LEGO Art range has evolved quite a lot since it was introduced. Flat, mosaic images have given way to 3D pieces of art. The latest is part of a new subtheme dubbed ‘The Fauna Collection’ and features a tiger’s face surrounded by colourful sprigs of flowers and plants. Here’s a quick look at The Fauna Collection – Tiger set.

As the name suggests, the Fauna Collection is inspired by the natural world. The set includes two elements: a Tiger’s face and a selection of flowers and plants which can be displayed around it. The Tiger’s face is layered to give it depth and texture. This way of building also helps to capture the striking appearance of the tiger. Such a simple thing as placing two yellow flat 2×2 tiles with holes on top of black plates and under other plates looks great. I do like the use of the white angled slopes used around the bottom part of the tiger’s face.

Around the edge of the tiger’s face are a series of friction joints. These are used to connect the various pieces of foliage. There are more points than there are plant pieces, but this is to allow you to switch them around to create custom variants. Although the set includes plant-inspired pieces, they aren’t as detailed or interestingly built as their Botanicals counterparts. But the set would look great displayed with any of the Botanicals sets. You can also use elements from other LEGO Botanical sets to include other flowers and plants.

The set can be displayed in two different ways. Option one includes a fold-out stand so it can be stood up on a surface. If you prefer, you can also display it on a wall. A hook is neatly built into the top part of the set, which can then be hung on a nail or screw. Although it’s not as heavy as past Art sets, I still wouldn’t trust mounting it on the wall via the sticky strips. The LEGO Art: The Fauna Collection – Tiger is available now.
