The Night Fury is a rare breed of dragon, known for its fearlessness and deadliness. After the deadly dragon is injured by Hiccup, the young Viking spares the dragon’s life, and they soon form a bond. The dragon becomes known as Toothless, thanks to its ability to retract its teeth. When this set was first rumoured, all we knew was that the infamous dragon inspired it. I think it’s safe to say that once the set was revealed, it wasn’t what we were expecting. Toothless has been recreated in a “chibi” style.
Thanks to sets from NINJAGO, Creator and the recent D&D set, there are many different examples of LEGO dragons. Yet, Toothless has more in common with the Stitch and Angel Disney sets than any of those. So Toothless is built in a seated position, with its head mounted in such a way that it can be rotated and tilted. This allows you to pose Toothless in fun ways. Especially thanks to the dragon’s huge mouth.
The mouth is a key feature of Toothless, as you can switch out sections of it. You can add a tongue, tasty fish or clip a blast of dragon fire to the roof of Toothless’s mouth. These help to capture the Dragon’s playful side. Due to the injury Toothless picks up, Hiccup builds the dragon a tail fin. This is featured on the tail as a printed element. The set doesn’t use stickers in favour of printed elements, which can also be found on the eyes and scales.
It’s not what I expected the set to be, and I have to admit that when it was announced, I was a little disappointed. But it’s grown on me; it manages to lean into Toothless’s goofy side. The ability to add different things to the dragon’s mouth is fun, but beyond that, the set has been created for display purposes. I’m sure a more realistic LEGO take on Toothless would have been impressive, but this is a smaller Icons set with a lower price point compared to others in the range. Although it’s a smaller Icons set, it would have been nice if the set included a small display stand and a Hiccup minifigure. Still, it’s nice to see other brands and IPs inspired by LEGO sets. We may see more sets inspired by How to Train Your Dragon, but if we don’t, this is an interesting little set.
