As part of this year’s 25th Anniversary of the LEGO® Star Wars theme, several sets have been released featuring a special Minifigure character. Once the recently revealed Imperial Dropship vs. Rebel Scout Speeder set is released next month, there will be seven 25th Anniversary Minifigures in total. The characters chosen for this special line-up of Minifigures come from various corners of Star Wars lore. Inspiration comes from games, Disney+ series, animation, the Expanded Universe and the movies. Here’s a closer look at all of them.
One of the first of the 25th Anniversary Minifigures released was ARC Trooper ‘Fives’. The character first appeared in the animated Clone Wars series. CT-5555 was one of the first clones to learn about the inhibitor chips, eventually leading to the Jedi Order’s downfall. This is the first time. ‘Fives’ has appeared as a Minifigure and can be found in set 75387: Boarding the Tantive IV.
Releasing alongside ‘Fives’ was a character from the old Expanded University which is now considered part of the Legends lore. Darth Malek is the apprentice to fan-favourite Sith Lord Darth Raven. Malek was introduced in the Knights of the Old Republic game series from Bioware. The Minifigure uses a unique piece of armour which sits around the Minifigures neck. It also has a narrow cape, both offering a decent recreation of the Legends character. Darth Malek can be found in set 75379: R2-D2.
A few months after the release of the sets featuring the characters detailed above, a third 25th Anniversary character arrived in the form of Saw Gerrera. The resistance fighter first appeared in the animated Clone Wars series before appearing in live-action in Rogue One. He’s also appeared in Rebels, Bad Batch, Andor and the EA Games’ Jedi games. The Minifigure is based on Saw’s appearance in Rogue One. His Minifigure is the least impressive of the line-up as his armour isn’t as elaborate and his missing the flash of grey in his hair. Saw Gerrera can be found in set 75383: Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator.
Ever since BD-1 was released, fans have hoped his Jedi chum, Cal Kestis would appear in LEGO form. Cal is a character introduced in EA Games’ Jedi games. He first appeared in Jedi: Fallen Order. Cal’s appearance is based on actor Cameron Monaghan. His Minifigure is inspired by Cal’s appearance in the first game. It’s a great Minifigure to own for fans of the game. Cal Kestis can be found in set 75394: Imperial Star Destroyer.
One of the most surprising of the characters featured in the 25th Anniversary line-up is Nien Numb. The Sullustan Rebel pilot played a key role in the Battle of Endor so the fact it’s taken 25 years for the character to appear as a Minifigure is what’s surprising. Nien Numb is an interesting-looking chap, I always assumed he was a short character but have since found out he’s as tall as an average human. His Minifigure uses a unique head element to perfectly reflect the character’s appearance. Although his flight suit is quite plain, the print detail nicely flows between the torso and legs. Nien Numb can be found in set 75396: Desert Skiff & Sarlacc Pit.
A couple of months ago, one of the stranger Star Wars sets was released called Creative Play Droid Builder. This set lets you construct four Droids and then dress them up with various accessories. The set also featured the younger version of Leia from the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series. This early version of Leia was just as sassy as her older self, which comes across in the Minifigure’s two expressions. Leia is also the only 25th Anniversary Minifigures to include another character in the form of her loyal Droid Lola. This is a printed element but represents the character nicely. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of Lola in the future. Young Leia can be found in set 75392.
Finally, the last addition to the 25th Anniversary Minifigures can be found in the upcoming set revealed alongside Jabba’s Sail Barge. The Droid QT-KT has an interesting backstory, a similarly named Droid was created for the daughter of 501st co-founder, Albin Johnston. Katie’s special Droid was given the moniker of R2-KT and was, in essence, a colour-swapped version of Artoo. The Droid became canon after appearing in several Star Wars projects. Lucasfilm has since taken the odd decision to rename and tweak the design of the character to create QT-KT. Now the character is mostly pink but still has the same casing as an Astromech Droid. This Minifigure is based on the character’s Clone Wars appearance. It lacks print detail on the rear of the Droid. It’s a shame the original version of R2-KT may never appear in a LEGO set but this is the next best thing. QT-KT can be found in set 40755: Imperial Dropship vs. Rebel Scout Speeder which is released on October 1st.
Unless another surprise character is revealed between now and Christmas, these characters complete the collection of 25th Anniversary Minifigures. Each one includes a special display stand featuring the 25th Anniversary logo and they can also all be linked together. It’s nice to see some unusual characters appear as Minifigures, especially since most of them will have little chance of appearing elsewhere. Unless they all get Microfighter sets next year just to wind up certain LEGO Star Wars ‘fans’.
