Introduced in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog has become a video gaming icon. The blue blur has gone on to become an animated cartoon, movie star and a questionable ice lolly. He’s also been the focus of a number of new LEGO® sets and now SEGA’s most famous games series has also inspired two new LEGO BrickHeadz sets. Here’s a closer look at the 213th and 214th LEGO BrickHeadz sets.
The basic build of a BrickHeadz set is very much the same regardless of which character it’s inspired by. So if you’ve built any of the previous 200 plus BrickHeadz characters you can expect pretty much the same from both Sonic and Tails BrickHeadz builds. If you’re new to BrickHeadz, then it’s a theme introduced a number of years ago which transforms iconic characters from a wide range of sources, into stylised cubic characters. Despite the similar builds it’s probably the most diverse LEGO theme in terms of IPs it covers.
Sonic the Hedgehog
Set Name: Sonic the Hedgehog | Set Number: 40627 | Pieces: 139 | RRP: £9.99/$9.99/9.99€
Sonic is an iconic character and has maintained a similar look since his first appearance in the early 90s. Because of this, he’s a little tricky to translate into the unique style of a BrickHeadz set. Despite that, you can easily tell this is Sonic, thanks to all the trademark features such as red trainers, blue spines and even a ring, which uses the new element introduced in the Sonic sets. One feature of the BrickHeadz characters is the eyes and I like that this has been tweaked to maintain the usual style found in BrickHeadz sets with the colourful appearance found on Sonic.
Miles ‘Tails’ Prower
Set Name: Miles ‘Tails’ Prower | Set Number: 40628 | Pieces: 131 | RRP: £9.99/$9.99/9.99€
Tails has been Sonic’s faithful friend since Sonic 2. Since then it’s appeared with Sonic on numerous appearances, so it’s only fitting he joins BrickHeadz Sonic. Tails fairs a little better in BrickHeadz form than Sonic does. It’s also built every so slightly differently in order to include the character’s twin tails and ears. Like Sonic, Tails also has unique eyes, which perfectly suit the characters whilst also maintaining the usual style of BrickHeadz sets.
Overall
Admittedly, these aren’t the best BrickHeadz sets. Tails is certainly the best of the pair, but I think Sonic is such a round-shaped character that his appearance doesn’t translate as well in the unique style of a BrickHeadz character. Still, I do like that the partnership between the LEGO Group and SEGA is continuing to flourish and seems a little more varied than the Nintendo one has been. Both SEGA-themed BrickHeadz sets will be available from September 1st. There are rumours of additional characters joining them in the future including Shadow, Amy and Knuckles.
