Instead of doing the usual review of a set, for the Fortnite range, I will see how the physical builds compare to the in-game inspiration. Kicking things off is the Supply Llama. In-game the Supply Llama is featured as a Llama-shaped pinata, filled with items. It has become an unofficial mascot for Fortnite, with its unique appearance being an instant marker for the popular live service game. Making The Supply Llama the ideal subject matter for one of the first few LEGO® sets based on the game.
The Supply Llama was introduced into Fortnite during Season 3. When it debuted, it merely acted as a rarer item box appearing randomly during matches. A few years later it became sentient and would still appear randomly but run away when approached. Even in this different form, it would still bestow players with items. The Supply Llama would later revert to being a static but rare supply box. Players from the early days of Fortnite will also be familiar with the Save the World mode. This was originally the base game for Fortnite before Battle Royale became the focus. In Save the World Llama and be opened for new weapons and items.
The Supply Llama also makes an appearance in LEGO Fortnite. Here they blend aspects of previous appearances. So they appear at random and offer various items but they are also ‘alive’ in the sense they are animated but don’t run away. Despite their brick-built antics in LEGO Fortnite, the set takes its inspiration from the original design.
In a nod to the Llama’s inner contents of useful items, the LEGO Supply Llama is also filled with mini-builds but these are inspired by things found in LEGO Fortnite. They include Dynamite, a lump of Rough Ruby, a Good Luck Charm, Grappler, Slurp Juice and some Slap Juice bottles. But the best of all mini-builds is a physical recreation of the backpack you have in-game which is dropped should you get downed when exploring. Early players of LEGO Fortnite will be haunted by the backpack and memories of trekking across the map to retrieve it.
These mini-builds can be dropped into the Supply Llama by opening the hatch on its back and they can then be spilled out by lifting one of the flaps found on the side of the Llama. This is a playful nod to the Llama’s in-game use and the choice to fill it with items from LEGO Fortnite is a nice touch.
This is not the only scale the LEGO Supply Llama has appeared in. As part of the promotional activity for LEGO Fortnite, life-sized LEGO Big Build Supply Llamas appeared around the world. A mini replica of the Supply Llama from LEGO Fortnite was also included in a special LEGO Fortnite package. This mini version matches the design of the Llamas which appear in LEGO Fortnite.
Despite Fortnite’s ever-evolving appearance and masses of character skins and customisable accessories, the Supply Llama has remained a familiar constant. Even in LEGO form, the unique colouring and appearance of the Supply Llama instantly evoke a connection to Fortnite. Which makes it a great set for fans of the game. The LEGO Fortnite Supply Llama is available now from LEGO stores and LEGO.com. The sets will be available from other retailers in January.
