LEGO Marvel Character Encyclopedia Book Review

Until October last year, DK Books hadn’t published a single LEGO® title inspired by the popular LEGO Marvel theme. The first LEGO Marvel book took a look at the many playsets, characters and buildable objects from across the Marvel Super Heroes theme. This new book just focuses on the minifigures from the LEGO Marvel universe. As with many of DK Books’ LEGO titles, it also features an exclusive LEGO minifigure character. Thanks to DK Books’ here’s an advanced look at the LEGO Marvel Character Encyclopedia.

The book is set out in chapters focused on different groups of characters – Spider-Man, The Avengers, Villians and Allies. Most pages of the book are dedicated to a single character, with a small number of pages featuring variants of the same characters or those who are linked in some way. Certain pages are accompanied by a Super Stats box, which includes information on which sets the minifigure is from and when it was released. Some minifigures also include additional snippets of information focused on their LEGO or comic book connections. A good example of this is the Falcon appears in several sets but is different each time.

The book offers a great visual guide to the surprisingly varied collections of Marvel minifigure characters. Be warned, as you flick through the book, you’ll be envious of those characters you don’t have in your collection. I have a fondness for LEGO Marvel sets, but even I had forgotten some of the characters found in the book, had featured in sets. Many characters featured in the book are inspired by their Marvel Cinematic Universe counterparts, however, some are simply from the overall world of Marvel.

The book features an exclusive minifigure, which for this release, is Sam Wilson’s Captain America. As MCU fans will know, Steve Rodgers passes the mantel of Captain America to Sam Wilson. The first time we get to see Sam’s take on the star-spangled man with a plan is in the Disney+ series, Falcon and the Winter Solider. This also inspired one of the characters in the Marvel LEGO Minifigures series released in 2021. The version included in the Character Encyclopedia is new. It’s not 100% clear where the inspiration for this version of the character has come from. In the ‘Brave New World’ trailers, the suit seems to be a lot more blue. The head used for the version in this book, is far better than the CMF versions, although the rest of the minifigure lacks the same level of print detail. The LEGO Marvel Character Encyclopedia will be available in the UK and Europe from October 3rd and elsewhere from October 15th. It can be pre-ordered now from selected retailers.
