LEGO® Brick Sketches are back with two new sets. They were introduced a couple of years ago after fan designer Chris McVeigh began working at the LEGO Group. They are textured 2D images which can be displayed like a picture. So a little different to most other sets. After featuring characters from both Star Wars, DC Comics and Disney, the upcoming new sets add Marvel Super Heroes to the mix. So here’s a closer at the new LEGO Brick Sketches Iron Man and Miles Morales sets.

Both Brick Sketches follow the same basic design with a base canvas created by a layer of four 12×4 white plates, this creates a 12×16 surface area. Although mainly created from white elements, much of ‘canvas’ gets covered with elements used to create the character image. On the rear of the set is a border of 1×10 and 1×16 bricks plus a layer of plates and connection points. These give you various display options, so they can be hung thanks to a couple of plate elements. But for many, the kickstand is the most useful display option. This is created by a couple of Technic rods connections and is connected by a couple of 1×3 hinge stub plate elements. It can be angled at various levels, to allow the Brick Sketches to sit at different angles.
The sets are created by layering various elements, mostly plates, this helps to give the image a textured surface. This is very evident with one of the sets. Compared to past sets from the theme, the Miles Morales set does offer something a little different. The hood piece is built separately and added to the top of the picture via a 2×2 studded connection point. Although it looks great, it’s super flimsy and can easily be dislodged with minimal force. The hood also restricts the base of the Miles Morales set as the pull string tabs hang over the bottom of the image.
Brick Sketches have always been a unique concept, even before becoming official products. They work particularly well for comic book characters as the style of the build is rather cartoon-like. It’s nice to see Miles Morales being featured in more LEGO sets, it’s just unfortunate the piece used to create the hood is so flimsy.
