I recently took A Look At LEGO®… Light & Sound and have recently managed to grab on of the new 2019 sets, which brings back the much loved but little used system from the 80s. It’s been over 20 years since the last LEGO set with Light & Sound was released and oh how times have changed. The original Light & Sound system used a bulky battery box as well as special metal lined elements, turn switches and bulbs to bring flashing lights and sounds to LEGO sets.
Fast forward to 2019 and things a very different, the entire Light & Sound system is now enclosed in a single element. The new Light & Sound brick is 2 studs wide and 6 studs long, with the base of the brick being a 2×4 plate. Instead of the old style LED bulbs the new version looks much more like an actual emergency vehicle siren. Which obviously limited its use to Fire, Police and Ambulance sets.
As someone with fond memories of the original Light & Sound System, I love to see it being brought back for a new generation to enjoy. The smaller modern version still has the essence of the original and obviously improves upon it vastly. Although there is currently only one version, it could be tweaked to work on other vehicles and hopefully more simple powered elements like this will continue to be introduced in other LEGO sets and themes.
