The basis of LEGO fandom is entrenched in the world of photography. From the images featured on boxes and those used on product pages to those taken for reviews and shared on social media. Photos can encapsulate a moment and using LEGO bricks and minifigures to create those moments has become extremely prevalent. Even the LEGO Group have recognised this and uses fan-created images to promote new sets on their social media accounts. This new book is partly an extension of that, bringing together a whole host of creators’ work.
Many similar books have focused solely on minifigures and there’s nothing wrong with that as they provide an amazingly creative focus for creating images. But this book includes not just minifigures, but small LEGO sets and even a couple of MOCs. They are all dropped into real-world environments, which makes them really pop. There’s something really enchanting about seeing LEGO builds and minifigures, which this book nicely portrays.
As well as showcasing LEGO elements in the wild so to speak, the book also gives focus to those who do so. For every image featured in the book, its creator is also shown and at the end of the book, there are details on how to see more of their work. Be that on social media or via Brick Central and Stuck in Plastic. One thing I would have liked to have seen the book cover is how to get into LEGO photography. Lighting, staging, what equipment to use, things like that. But the book is more focused on showcasing LEGO photography as opposed to being a guide to creating it. Those communities that have contributed to the book, will be more than happy to share their knowledge in other ways.
LEGO In Focus will be published in the UK on October 13th and can be pre-ordered from Amazon and selected book retailers. It will be published in North America on October 4th.
