LEGO Disney 100 BrickHeadz Double Packs Review

The Disney brand has been a pretty big source of inspiration for the BrickHeadz range. There have been more Disney characters transformed into BrickHeadz sets than any other popular IPs that’s without even including Star Wars, Marvel and 20th Century Studios characters. The latest crop of BrickHeadz sets are inspired by iconic Disney characters and form part of the Disney 100th Anniversary celebrations. All this week I’ll be joining in those celebrations with reviews of various Disney sets and other Disney-themed features. My next LEGO Disney review focuses on the trip of LEGO BrickHeadz Disney double packs, which feature classic Disney villains and iconic Pixar creations.

Disney 100 BrickHeadz Group

As with almost all of the LEGO BrickHeadz characters the build is very similar. Each character consists of a core of bricks which acts as a base to add the necessary details to turn it into various characters. There are some deviations from the usual style with some of these characters, in particular Wall•E and EVE. Another consistent trait of the BrickHeadz sets is the lack of stickers, all of the detailing not achieved with elements is captured through printed parts, so there are no stickers. As mentioned there’s been a large number of Disney characters transformed into BrickHeadz sets, some of which are double packs. Their pairings mostly make sense although these new sets are a little trickier to place beyond Wall•E and EVE both appear in the same film.

Eve & Wall•E

40619: EVE & WALL•E

As mentioned the BrickHeadz characters have a very similar core build, there have been a few deviations to that core design, and even those have retained traits of the established BrickHeadz appearance. However, these particular characters have mixed things up. They aren’t the same size as most of the BrickHeadz nor are they as small as the ‘Buddiez’ such as Yoda and Gollum. Wall•E, in particular, is quite different to any other character, it even lacks the usual pink brick ‘brain’, thankfully it does retain the unique BrickHeadz eyes just as 2×2 round tiles. Eve is a little more similar to the standard BrickHeadz design but even this has slight differences, including using transparent pieces to give the illusion of Eve’s floating head and body. Eve does include the pink brick ‘brain’ but oddly lacks the unique eyes. It’s sort of the calling card of the BrickHeadz sets so it’s a shame it missing. Only Vader, Batman, Iron Man and Star-lord have lacked this unique detail.

Cruella & Maleficent

Set Name: Cruella & Maleficent | Set Number: 40630 Pieces: 320 | RRP: £17.99/$19.99/19.99€

40620: Cruella & Maleficent

The pairing of these two characters is a little odd, apart from both being Disney Villains they are really connected. Although both characters have appeared in both animated and live-action Disney films. Cruella is a great build, with subtle little details which become more apparent when building the set. I love the use of wheel arches to recreate de Vil’s designer coat and the way her clothes have been added is quite unique, with a strip of plates clipped in sideways. I also like the sand green 1×1 plates behind the eyes. It’s the perfect companion for the Dalmatian Petz set. Maleficent is an iconic villain, first appearing in Sleeping Beauty before being the subject of two live-action films. Her flowing gown and evil headdress have been captured nicely in her BrickHeadz character. Despite being dressed mostly in black the use of curved elements gives the character detail along with the printed brick used for the front of her dress. The only unfortunate area is her arms. The means by which the bricks are connected shows off a splash of purple and light blue, which is super obvious against the black, but little can be done to stop this.

Moana & Merida

Set Name: Moana & Merida | Set Number: 40621 Pieces: 410| RRP: £17.99/$19.99/19.99€

40621: Moana & Merida

This is another pack whose pairing makes no sense. Moana is from a Disney Animation film and Merida is from a Pixar adventure. I guess they are both considered not being traditional Disney Princesses, with most characters craving adventure over royal duties. Despite the odd pairing, this is a pretty impressive set of characters. Both are super detailed largely due to their hair. Moana is from the Muri tribe and this is reflected in her outfit, which includes a printed brick for the top and a series of leaf elements to create her headdress. It’s a little tricky to get them lined up due to their spacing but they do look great against Moana’s curly black hair. She also has a brick-built oar, which is quite odd. BrickHeadz often has accessories but they are normally those used for minifigures. Pixar’s Brave followed the story of a reluctant Scottish princess Merida. Despite being royalty, Merida wears a simple blue dress, so her BrickHeadz is quite plain in that sense. However, I really like how the arrow quiver has been incorporated into her outfit. What her outfit lacks in detail is more than made up for with her hair. Her bushy head of red hair uses a lot of orange elements to recreate it and the way they are combined does an impressive job of replicating hair.

Overall

Disney characters are perfectly suited for the BrickHeadz range, these new faces nicely expand the range. Wall•E and EVE are the most unusual of them all and as they have been out of stock for a while, they are obviously the most popular. (big thanks to Al for getting hold of this set for me from his local store). I quite like Moana and Merida as they are nicely detailed and capture the essence of the characters. Cruella and Maleficent are the same, with the use of elements giving them unique details. Each set is a nice way to mark the 100th anniversary of Disney as well as expand the BrickHeadz line-up with many more classic characters.
