How It Works: LEGO Mosaic Maker Online

As reported last week the LEGO® Mosaic Maker experience is now available online in both the US and UK. Over on LEGO.com the new product has already got a couple of reviews, which prompted this round-up of how the Mosaic Maker works away from the original in-store experience. It’s you’ve visited one of the LEGO stores or LEGOLAND parks offering the LEGO Mosaic Maker, then you may know how that works. After buying the set at a till you’ve given a card to use in a special LEGO photo booth. In here you can snap an image of yourself and after selecting which picture you like, the Mosaic Maker machine gets to work creating your set. You can a large colour printout of your image, which acts as the instructions plus the box, which contains a large base plate and bags of five different coloured 1×1 brick plates. These come in yellow, white, black, light grey and dark grey.

The online version works in a similar way. Obviously, the photo booth aspect of the experience isn’t possible at home. Instead, you need to upload an image to the Mosaic Maker page on LEGO.com. As you upload an image, it doesn’t just need to be your face, it could be a pet or an image of something else. There is a disclaimer you need to check before proceeding, but the ‘at home’ experience offers more choice than the in-store option. Once you’ve uploaded your image, there are various ways to tweak it, including how much of certain colours are featured and different backgrounds.

This is where things differ significantly to the original in-store option, once you’ve decided on your image you can get save and download your image, which replaces the print-off given in-store. You will not get a printed sheet with your order. Now, this may seem annoying, but it actually means you can endlessly rebuild your image by using the online app to create multiple images.

Your set will still feature a baseplate and all the various elements needed to create your image. The only real difference is the way you get the instructions. You can still find the Mosaic Maker in various LEGO stores around the world, but many stores are unable to offer the experience due to COVID restrictions. If like me you don’t live near a store offering the Mosaic Maker, it’s the perfect opportunity to get your hands on the set. If you’ve already got the set from a store, you can use the online experience to create new images and rebuild it.

The LEGO Mosaic Maker is currently only available online in the US and UK. With an RRP of $129.99 and £99.99.
