It’s the second day of Disney’s D23 Expo and after the news of more content coming to LEGO® Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga from yesterday’s Disney & Marvel Games Showcase, it’s all about upcoming films and Disney+ series today. During the Hall D23 Presentation new details of upcoming Marvel, Star Wars, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Studios were revealed. Much of what was shown during the panel remains exclusive to the event, but some trailers have been revealed online and others have shared details on social media. Although not directly related to LEGO content, Disney and its associated brands, inspired a large amount of the LEGO product range. Almost every Marvel and Star Wars movie will have at least one set based on them and more Disney+ content is also inspiring LEGO sets. So it’s extremely likely that many of the announcements made today will have an effect on future LEGO products and sets. So here’s a brief round-up of announcements from the Hall D23 Presentation.
Star Wars Disney+
We’ve already had one LEGO set based on Andor but with the prequel series set to cover a big chunk of Star Wars content and a second series already confirmed, expect more sets inspired by the Disney+ series. It begins on September 1st and new trailer was revealed during the panel.
A new animated series was announced earlier this year, Tales of the Jedi will follow the stories of a number of the Jedi including Ahsoka, Count Dooku and Qui-Gon Jinn. It begins next month so it’s highly unlikely there will be any sets inspired by it released this year. But it could inspire some 2023 sets, especially as it would allow many popular characters to be featured in sets, in different variants.
The Mandalorian will return in a third season in February 2023. The popular Disney+ series has inspired a large number of LEGO sets in recent years, so expect many of the January Star Wars sets to be heavily focused around The Mandalorian. Most importantly the series features Babu Frik!
News of the live-action Ahsoka series and Star Wars Skeleton Crew was brief, but both series are perfectly suited for LEGO sets. It was also revealed that the second season of The Bad Batch would arrive in early January.
Marvel Disney+
The first trailer for Secret Invasion has been released, it will see Nick Fury return as he tried to uncover a Skrull coop, in which the shape-shifting aliens have replaced many important figures. It will lead directly into Armour Wars. Both series should provide interesting content for future LEGO sets.
Marvel Theatrical
The only big movie news from the panel was the cast reveal of the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. The film will see a number of past characters join forces as a sort of anti-Avengers-like team. The MCU Thunderbolts will include Red Guardian, Yalena Belova, Ghost, US Agent, Bucky Barnes, Taskmaster and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
Lucasfilm & 20th Century Studios
Nothing majorly exciting from Lucasfilm and 20th Century, not in relation to possible LEGO connections anyway. Willow got a new trailer, but it’s very unlikely there will be any Willow LEGO sets, which seems a missed opportunity. Indiana Jones 5 was discussed but nothing has been released online. It’s been rumoured for a while that the new film will see the return of the LEGO Indiana Jones theme.
