Following a look back at the Mission: Impossible content and set, got me thinking about some of the other impressive one-off delights LEGO® Dimensions bestowed upon us. LEGO Dimensions combined the much-loved format of the TT Games’ LEGO titles with the buildable delights of LEGO sets and minifigures. It also managed to combine an unrivalled array of IPs from a number of iconic franchises. One such franchise was the platform puzzler Portal from Valve. This iconic video game series began with Portal being released as part of Valve’s The Orange Box collection, but it would be Portal 2 which cemented the game’s iconic status. Players took on the role of Chell, who is trapped inside the Aperture Science Laboratories Computer-Aided Enrichment Center. Here she is tasked with testing a portal-creating gun through a series of fiendish puzzles and some light ribbing and promise of cake from AI assistant GLaDOS.
In LEGO Dimensions, adding the LEGO Chell minifigure to the Toy Pad unlocked the Aperture Science level. This wasn’t just a Portal-themed level, it actually acts as a sequel to Portal 2. It blended the usual LEGO Games gameplay with elements from Portal, such as the Portal Gun and its ability to create bridges between two panels. It even featured the original voice cast from Portal 2, with Ellen McLain back as GLaDOS, Stephen Merchant returning as Wheatley and J.K. Simmons once again portraying Cave Johnson. It even included an original end credits song, written by Jonathan Coulton. Along with the Portal-themed level, the Portal 2 Level Pack also unlocked a Portal Adventure World.
The physical aspects of the Portal 2 Level Pack included the Chell minifigure, complete with a unique Portal Gun element. The buildable elements included a Companion Cube and Sentry Turret, with both of these being able to be rebuilt into alternate creations. Both elements could be used during the Portal 2 level to solve puzzles.
