LEGO® Games kicked things off in 1995, but it would take another 10 years for the digital brick adventures to really kick things off and it had a little help from a galaxy far, far away. LEGO and Star Wars has been a rather popular thing for over 20 years, but back in 2005 LEGO Star Wars sets had only been on sale for a few and the idea to blend the LEGO brand, Star Wars and video games wasn’t a sure thing. In fact, many publishers passed on the game but once it was released in March 2015, it was clear retelling the stories of Star Wars gelled perfectly with the fun of LEGO bricks and minifigures. LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game would kick off an impressive range of titles from TT Games that continue today. Without LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, there wouldn’t be any of the LEGO Games which followed it. The game would also inspire the tone and style of The LEGO Movie, TV shows and other games.
Traveller’s Tales started work on the game in 2003 with a little help from LEGO Interactive. But the LEGO Group decided to drop in-house game production and publishing the following year. Some ex-members of LEGO Interactive formed Giant Interactive, which took on the publishing role for the game. Giant and Traveller’s Tales would later combine to form TT Games. LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game followed the timeline of events from the prequel trilogy of films. Players could play through Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clone and Revenge of Sith. As well as unlocking a bonus level inspired by A New Hope. Over 50 characters were playable, many of them from the various LEGO playsets.
The legacy of the game can be seen with the upcoming release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. The new game will not only reimagine moments from the original game, but it will also feature bonus content directly lifted from the game with Mumble Mode. A much-loved aspect of the early Traveler’s Tale developed LEGO Games.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will be released on April 5th and is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo Switch and PC.
