Click & Snap: Playing With Your Food

They say you shouldn’t play with your food, but it’s fine when it’s made from plastic and worn by a minifigure. As LEGO® minifigures have become elaborate, they have donned all sorts of weird and wonderful outfits. This is most prevalent in the long-running LEGO Minifigures line and began back in 2015 with Series 13 and the Hot Dog Man. Since then over foodstuffs have inspired other similar costumed Food Mascots. They have inspired me to give focus to the foods in the latest Click & Snap. With seven different foods the focus of the photos. Here they are and there was no food waste from these images, all food was used to create a tasty dinner or a snack.

Hot Diggity Dog

The Hot Dog Man appeared in LEGO Minifigues Series 13 and kicked off the Food Mascot trend. The Hot Dog bun outfit has been used in other sets including those based on the LEGO NINJAGO Movie and even a Friends set, where it was won by a Mini-doll.

Let’s Go Bananas

In 2016, the Banana Guy appeared in Series 16 of the LEGO Minifigures. This ‘a-peeling’ food suit also inspired a larger Keychain Light and bagtag. The same element was reused in 2019 for the Party Banana Juice Bar GWP set. Both can be seen below.

He’s A-Maize-ing

In 2017, Series 17 of the LEGO Minifigures debuted another new food suit, this time inspired by a corn-on-the-cob. The Corn Cob Guy transformed sweetcorn into a wearable costume. It also had a fan in the LEGO City mayor, Solomon Fleck, who wore a Corn Cob suit with no explanation.

Dude, Don’t Be So Melondramatic

After the success of The LEGO Movie, its second part was even whackier and featured plenty of colourful characters. Many of them appeared in The LEGO Movie 2 Minifigure series released alongside the movie in 2019. One such character was the Watermelon Dude. This used an interesting new costume piece, which has a strong connection to other Food Mascots.

A Pizza The Action

Turns out a slice of watermelon can also double up as a tasty slice of pizza. Series 19 of the LEGO Minifigures featured the same part used for the Watermelon Dude for the Pizza Costume Guy. Whilst other Food Mascots probably love their outfits, the Pizza Costume Guy is probably being forced to wear it.

Give Peas A Chance

As the LEGO Minifigure line reached its 20th series in 2020, the Pea Pod Costume Girl was introduced. Oddly, despite her love of peas as fresh as the moment the pod went pop, she also had an apple. Maybe it’s a Danish thing. As with other Food Mascots, the Pea Pod Costume Girl also became a keyring.

Just Chilin’

With the 22nd series of LEGO Minifigures, the Food Mascots ranks grew with the Chili Costume Fan. As you’ll notice the ‘Guy’ and ‘Girl’ tags have been dropped in 2022 in favour of the ‘fan’ moniker. The Chili Costume Fan was also one of the first Food Mascots to allow the character to ditch the costume, with the addition of a hairpiece.

Have Your Cake and Eat It

It’s not just the LEGO Minifigures series that has given us Food Mascots. The recently released Birthday Build A Minifigure pack found in LEGO Stores, features a Cake Suit Fan. This once again uses the wedge costumes used for both the Watermelon and Pizza Food Mascots. This time it’s decorated to be a tasty slice of cake. Beneath the cake costume, the minifigure has great decoration.

You scream I scream, We All Scream For Ice Cream

It’s not often food-based characters are introduced beyond the LEGO Minifigures line. But in 2022, LEGO City debuted the Ice Cream suit, which comes in three different colours across two different LEGO City sets. The Blue and Pink Ice Cream Suits are worn by the Ice Cream Crooks in the Ice Cream Truck Police Chase set. With a Green variant found in the Beach Lifeguard Station set and worn by an Ice Cream vendor.
