Blockbusters – LEGO DUPLO At The Movies

When The LEGO® Movie 2 sets were revealed, there was an intersting little DUPLO set, which transformed Emmet and Lucy into cute looking DUPLO figures. They were so cute I tweeted out an image of the pair, which has been extremely popular. But Emmet and Lucy aren’t the first blockbuster characters to feature in DUPLO sets. As LEGO fans you probably don’t pay that much attention to the sets focused toward the youngest builders. But there really are some fun sets out there, which feature iconic characters in a completely new style.

Many of the early 2000 sets featured a number of Disney characters. Many iconic faces Magical Kingdom make the perfect choice to become DUPLO sets. Over the years these have included Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan and Pixar characters such as Lighting McQueen and Mater below.

A couple of years ago LEGO decided to use some of their other popular licenses in DUPLO sets. Although the comic book legends of the DC universe aren’t the first thing you think of when someone says toys for 2 to 5 year olds. Some of the first blockbuster sets features the super heroes and villains from DC Comics. Batman have been a popular addition to the LEGO line-up for a number of years, so it’s fitting he would

Every hero needs a bad guy or two to slap on the wrist for being naughty and the same is no different for the cutesy DUPLO versions. Of course the DC DUPLO universe bad folk aren’t overly menacing, they are manage to blend the style of the unique DUPLO figures, with the iconic look of the characters they are based on. A trio of the caped crusaders villainous foe have appeared in a couple of DUPLO sets, these include Poison Ivy, Penguin and Catwoman.

Batman even got a cute little DUPLO version of the Batmobile, one of the most recreated Bat-vehicles in the LEGO DC Super Heroes range. The DUPLO version was partly based on the classic Tim Burton Batmobile, although the Adam West-era Batman does look at little out of place in it.

More recently the world of Marvel also started to appear in DUPLO sets, the first of which featured Spider-Man. But for me the best of the included DUPLO figures was the Hulk. Known for a rage than quells deep within him, the Hulk is one angry fellow. In DUPLO form is as far from angry as you can get, although behind that cheery smile, he probably still wants to rip someone’s arms off, much in the same way retail have to grin and bear it will annoying customers.

This year the LEGO introduced LEGO fans of all ages to the joys of dinosaurs, as they released Jurassic World sets across three age ranges including for the first time, LEGO DUPLO. A duo of sets featured fun looking dinos but more importantly, a Chris Pratt DUPLO figure. Not content will slowly taking over the minifigure line-up with roles including Emmet, Star-Lord, Owen and upcoming Rex Dangervest, Chris’ Jurassic World character Owen Grady looks just a fly in DUPLO form, especially when riding a T. rex.

Which brings us to the inspiration for the feature, the upcoming LEGO Movie 2 DUPLO set. As we saw in the last moments of The LEGO Movie, DUPLO plays a key part in the sequel. Of the 19 sets being released, based on the new movie, there will be one DUPLO set called ‘Emmet and Lucy’s Visitors from the DUPLO® Planet’. This include DUPLO version of Lucy and Emmet, which have a slightly different style head to other DUPLO figures, most notably is the lack of nose and more minifigure shaped head. It’s not yet clear if these style of character will actually appear in the movie, but they are pretty darn cute.

Many of the set featured above are still available and can be found on shop.LEGO.com, in LEGO Brand Stores and selected toy retailers.
