With the first-ever trailer for the third Deadpool movie and the character’s debut in the MCU, possibly being released during the Super Bowl, it’s a great time to look at Deadpool’s LEGO® history. The Merc with a Mouth isn’t exactly kid-friendly but he’s made some notable appearances in LEGO-from. The first was way back in 2012 when the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes theme was first introduced. Deadpool appeared in X-Men-themed set 6899: Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown. Deadpool joined his mutant buddy Logan for his only physical LEGO appearance.
The following year, TT Games brought the world of LEGO Marvel to life in the much-loved LEGO Marvel Super Heroes game. Deadpool helped narrate a series of side-quest which featured some of Marvel’s oddest characters. Red Brick became Deadpool Red Bricks and could be purchased from Deadpool aboard the S.H.E.I.L.D. Helicarrier.
In 2017, Deadpool became Deadpool Duck and the first Deadpool-themed San Diego Comic-Con exclusive minifigure. This was given away via a lottery system during SDCC. The character is a fusion of Deadpool and Howard the Duck, whilst the minifigure reused Donald the Duck’s head.
A Deadpool variant would also be used for another San Diego Comic-Con exclusive minifigure in 2018. This time Deadpool got a western makeover to become Sheriff Deadpool, complete with a Stetson hat and a rootin’ tootin’ moustache.
LEGO sets inspired by movies have a reputation for spoiling key moments or being wildly unconnected to them. So in 2016, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds used this to promote the first Deadpool movie and shared a couple of ‘sets’ based on the Deadpool film. Set 6969: Deadpool Space Squid Shark Balloon Battle and set 2016: Deadpool Hotdog Moose and Owl.
Deadpool’s LEGO future is uncertain. The character’s adult tone would make it difficult to see him appear in simple playsets. Apart from maybe a bust or LEGO Art set, it would be equally difficult to feature the character in an 18+ set. Which is a shame as a Deadpool buildable figure would be pretty cool and a great companion piece to the recent buildable Wolverine. The untitled Deadpool movie is set to be released later this year.
