We’ve had Light bricks, Sound bricks and even bricks that could interact with touchscreens and now LEGO are set to introduce edible bricks. The LEGO® Group have been working hard to create sustainable LEGO bricks that will help to cutdown and eventually eliminate the need to use traditional plastics. Earlier this year, it was announced that certain plant elements will now be made from a new plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane. This has been taken a step further with bricks than can also be safely eaten. They look use like other LEGO elements, but if you pop one in your mouth, you’ll notice they have a fruity taste, quite like a boiled sweet. The new edible elements will follow the same cue as their plant based counterparts, with the initial edible pieces being some of the smaller food pieces. FIRST EDIBLE LEGO® BRICKS WILL BE LAUNCHED IN 2018
LEGO® food elements such as hotdogs, croissants and apples will be made from safe-to-eat plastic-type material sourced from recycled sweets in the future and will appear in LEGO boxes already in 2018.
Production has started on a range of edible LEGO® elements made from a safe-to-eat plastic-type material. The new sustainable LEGO ‘food’ elements will come in varieties including hotdog sausages, red apple and even green apples.
“At the LEGO Group we want to make a positive impact on the world around us, and are working hard to make great play products for children using edible materials. We are proud that the first LEGO elements made from deliciously sourced materials are in production and will be in LEGO boxes this later year. This is a great first step in our ambitious commitment of making all LEGO bricks using sustainable materials,” said April Narre, Vice President, Edible Construction at the LEGO Group.
The move is part of the LEGO Group’s commitment to use sustainable materials in core products and packaging by 2030.
Uncompromised quality and safety
The new edible LEGO elements are made from compound similar to the one used to create ‘boiled’ sweets, they are technically identical to those produced using conventional plastic. The elements have been tested to ensure the edible material meets the high standards for quality and safety that the LEGO Group has, and consumers expect from LEGO products.
“LEGO products have always been about providing high quality play experiences giving every child the chance to shape their own world through inventive play. Children and parents will not notice any difference in the quality or appearance of the new elements, but they will enjoy the delicious taste of these new pieces” said April Narre.
The unique LEGO brick design, and the LEGO Group’s uncompromised focus on quality and safety during the past 60 years ensures that two LEGO bricks produced decades apart can still fit together. As the LEGO Group is working towards using sustainable materials in its core products and packaging, it will remain strongly rooted and driven by the uncompromised focus on high product quality and safety. Although these new elements can be safely ingested, they will remain fully compatible with all past and future LEGO elements.

It’s worth noting that edible elements will be clearly marked on packaging and will be packaged separately to other elements. We do not suggest you down any of your current elements. To learn more about these new pieces click here.
