10391: Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams Set Review

Pharrell Williams’ Piece By Piece finally arrives in UK cinemas today, albeit on a limited release. Nevertheless, it’s the ideal time to take a brief look at the accompanying LEGO® set. The Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams set is inspired by the new film which recounts the music producer’s life story through a LEGO lens. Piece By Piece is animated in the style of previous LEGO movies but that’s where the similarities end. Despite the film’s art style it’s a documentary and features several high-profile appearances from some of Pharrell’s famous friends such as Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake and Gwen Stefani. Among the talking heads are more fantastical moments including one featuring this sleek-looking spaceship.

The concept of the film is strange enough so it’s only right that the set inspired by it, follows suit. It features two opposing elements a rocket mounted a colourful jetstream and a collection of disembodied heads. Those heads are mounted in a black frame labelled ‘My Phriends’ something the product description states is an abacus. As you build through the set, each step features 7 different heads. Including the two minifigures, the set features over 50 different heads. They feature a variety of different expressions and skin tones. They are a nice collection of elements but they do seem an odd addition to the spaceship.

Atop the gallery of heads are spots to mount two black space helmets with gold visors. Along with two minifigures, they both feature the spacesuit torso and legs. The design of these is quite cool and matches the overall design of the spaceship. I’m assuming one of these minifigures represents Pharrell and the other is a generic female astronaut. Of course, the heads can be mixed and matched with those additional ones. Although the lack of hair limits the ability to replicate yourself.

The spaceship is similar in design to the iconic NASA space shuttles. Just scaled down quite a bit and lacks the bulky fuel tanks. It also switches the usual white facade for black, which certainly looks much cooler. Especially when paired with the gold drum-lacquered canopy piece sitting over the cockpit. Although this is packaged in a separate packet, the piece in my set has picked up an awkward scratch. The spaceship also has a couple of printed elements. These include a brick featuring the Atlantis Apartments name and two round tiles featuring a representation of the ship and its colourful exhaust.

Much of the buildable aspect of the set is focused on the tall, angular and colourful spaceship trail. Not only does this represent the exhaust trail produced by a blasting-off rocket, but it also becomes an elaborate display stand for the spaceship. This is best described as a tower, which is then clad in colourful strips of plates. The result is quite effective, especially as it’s angled and balanced perfectly when the spaceship is slotted onto the top of it. The column features streaks of colour with the flat tile strips dotted with studs. The column is mounted on a plate of white elements, which not only provides the necessary footprint to balance the set, it is decorated with domed pieces to represent the bellows of vapour left behind when a rocket blasts off.

It’s an interesting set, both in terms of its content and appearance. The abacus of heads does seem odd but offers some nice and new head options. For me, the colourful tower streaming from the rear of the rocket is the best part of the set. Especially as it’s a simple structure compared to similar builds and it doesn’t rely on Technic pieces to create it. The LEGO Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams set is available now. Piece By Piece is showing in selected cinemas now.
