Marvel Studios’ big screen output has been a little light this year but that hasn’t stopped the LEGO Group looking ahead to next year. In February, Captain America returns in Brave New World. This sees Sam Wilson fully embrace the role of Captain America and is called into action by Thaddeus Ross, now president of the United States. This set is inspired by moments from the latest MCU adventure and features a vehicle and character from the film. But does it make for an exciting LEGO® Marvel set? Here’s an early peek at the LEGO Marvel Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle set.

As mentioned, Captain America: Brave New World is set to be released on Valentine’s Day next year and is the penultimate film in Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the mantle of Captain America is passed onto Sam Wilson. Previously known as Falcon, the ex-Air Force Pararescueman doesn’t feel worthy of continuing the legacy of Steve Rodgers but soon changes his mind during the events of the Disney+ series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In Brave New World, President Ross reinstates the military role of Captain America. Sam is soon thrust into an international incident, believed to involve the fallen Celestial, Tiamut.
Many of the Marvel sets feature a vehicle of some kind and this set is no different. The product description bills the vehicle as a fighter jet but it looks a little more futuristic than that. It does feature the essence of a jet with a cockpit and wings but that is where the similarities end. The wings are set quite far back towards the end of the jet and angled even further back, creating a ‘V-like shape. I quite like how a mixture of elements has been used here to clad the wings joint to the body of the jet. These add an interesting splash of detail and provide a sturdy connection. This also provides a place for a pair of stud shooters to sit. Sitting between the wings is a large engine exhaust. This is another feature which makes the set appear more futuristic than a standard military jet.
The large sloped cockpit feels more like it should be part of a spaceship. This can be flipped up to reveal a section for a lone minifigure to be seated. This is another area that makes great use of elements to provide detail. These frame the area around the cockpit canopy nicely and also lead to a hidden compartment behind the cockpit. Flipping off the bonnet plate revealed a removable ‘post box’ inside this are three silver bars. The product description suggests these are ‘medals’ but it would appear this is the legendary Adamantium ore, rumoured to be introduced in the film.
As with many sets, the allure for many will be the set’s minifigures. This set features three standard minifigures and a new ‘Hulk’ BigFig. Sam Wilson’s Captain America has previously featured in minifigure form a surprising number of times, not including his Falcon persona. Each version has been different and this one is based on his appearance in the new film. The new suit is closer in design to Steve Rodgers’ Captain America, featuring a mainly blue suit. Although dual-moulded legs are used they are printless. This is odd as the recent Captain America minifigure from DK Books’ LEGO Marvel Character Encyclopedia has printed legs. With Sam Wilson now being Captain America, there’s a new Falcon in town. It was teased in the Disney+ series that Joaquín Torres would become the Falcon and that’s become a reality. The new Falcon is very different to past versions and has a more military look. This means the print detail is a little generic and nonexistent on the legs.
Ruth Bat-Seraph has a varied and somewhat controversial backstory in the comics. She’s a mutant and secret service agent. It appears she is now a former Black Widow and working under President Ross. Her minifigure is quite generic but at least her torso is interesting.
Both Captain America and the Falcon have wings, these are both built from a selection of elements, making them a little more detailed than past versions. Both characters’ wings use several stickers, which is a little disappointing. Captain America also features a triangle element to represent the Redwing Drone, Sam has used when he was the Falcon. However, I must commend both character’s heads. Each features a side showing more of the characters’ faces along with an alternate side featuring their combat masks.
Red Hulk has only appeared in one past LEGO set so the character’s return is long awaited. This version is basically a red version of the standard Hulk and uses the new style of the BigFig which includes a removable head and hair. Little else can be said but I’m glad I can finally add the character to my collection.
I’m a huge Marvel fan and enjoy how the MCU has evolved over the past 16 years. This admiration of the MCU has transferred to the LEGO sets inspired by various Marvel media. However, some of those LEGO Marvel sets have had questionable price points and this particular set continues that trend. It does include three minifigures plus a BigFig but even then, those characters lack detail and there are a lot of stickers used. The jet offers a little playability but still feels a little simplistic. But the key point for me is the Red Hulk finally makes a return after 7 years. Captain America vs. Red Hulk Battle will be released on December 1st and can be pre-ordered now.
