40755: Imperial Dropship Vs. Rebel Scout Speeder Review

Throughout 2024, LEGO® Star Wars has celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a series of special sets. Some of these sets have also featured a unique Star Wars character, appearing in minifigure-form for the very first time. The latest LEGO Star Wars set to be released features the final of the special minifigures and is also a remake of two previously released sets. The Imperial Dropship vs. Rebel Scout Speeder set is inspired by two previous LEGO Star Wars releases from 2008. Set 7668: Rebel Scout Speeder and 7667: Imperial Dropship each featured four minifigures along with a craft inspired by the Star Wars universe.

The set is inspired by two previously released LEGO Star Wars sets, 7668: Rebel Scout Speeder and 7667: Imperial Dropship. Each set featured four minifigures along with a craft inspired by the Star Wars universe. The set isn’t a direct remake of those sets, instead, it’s inspired by them, losing a minifigure from each fraction but gaining a unique 25th Anniversary character.

When Star Wars toys were first released back in the late 70s they took inspiration from the films but once Return of the Jedi was released, inspiration came from elsewhere. This led to some odd vehicles, crafts and ships being released. I fondly remember having many of them as a kid and this set has the same feel as those odd toys of the 80s. The original sets were a product of their time, with the updated versions making great use of newer elements and build techniques.

The Imperial Army used various means to transport its troops into battle. In this set that takes the form of a rather small Dropship. Compared to the original design, the latest version is far more dynamic. A large ball joint is used to connect both parts of the ship, which allows the front section to slope downwards. Troopers can be sat on the back part of the vehicle with room for another in the cockpit area. Thanks to newer elements, the ship looks much better compared to the original one from 2003.

The rag-tag nature of the Rebel Alliance means they are less inclined to have multiple means of getting their troops around. They have opted for a landspeeder-type vehicle. This is a lot more compact compared to the original version. It also feels much bulkier, thanks to the layering of sloped and angled elements. The Speeder still features the awkward gun on the rear but it can be easily popped off to become a standalone turret. I own the original version of this set and this version is a vastly better-looking vehicle.

The set includes six minifigures, three Stormtroopers and three Rebel Fleet Troopers. These aren’t anything exciting as they are standard versions of the characters. Although the two factions share the same torsos, legs and helmets, they all have different heads. They all include their relevant weapons.

It’s fair to say most people won’t be purchasing this set for those minifigures. It’s the final 25th Anniversary minifigure which is the set’s biggest draw. The final character to join the line-up of special minifigures is a droid called QT-R2. This pink Astromech droid is partly inspired by the legendary fan-created droid called R2-KT. It’s a shame Lucasfilm choose to change the name and design of KT, especially has the backstory of the character is so special. Still, it’s nice to have another unique character becoming a minifigure.

When this set was first revealed it was assumed it was a promotional set due to be offered alongside the recently released Jabba’s Sail Barge. It turned out to be a retail set, however since building it I think it was intended to be a GWP but the decision was made to change that at some point ahead of its release. There are various things which suggest this was intended as a GWP set. Firstly, is its set number and then the instructions don’t have a QR, this is normally the case with promotional or exclusive sets. I can only assume that the fact the set features a 25th Anniversary minifigure could have influenced the change in release strategy. Each of the other 25th minifigures has been included in readily available sets, placing the final one as a difficult-to-get set would have caused uproar even though LEGO Star Wars fans rarely complain.
