Yesterday, the Disney D23 Expo showcased a second day of Disney reveals and announcements. The big focus of Saturday was animation, in particular Marvel Animation. The animated output from Marvel has already inspired several LEGO® sets including the recent X-Men X-Jet, Wolverine Claw and Buildable Figure plus the Marvel Studios Minifigures from last year. The upcoming slate of new shows from Marvel Animation could inspire some of the LEGO Marvel sets coming in the future.
Marvel’s What If…? will get a third and sadly, final series. The new series will include a Sam Wilson-led Avengers and some of the lesser-used MCU characters including Moon Knight, Photon, Shan-Chi, Ironheart, White Vision and Red Guardian. The heroes will don mech suits to take on Gamma-powered monsters.
Marvel’s Zombies expands upon the zombie-focused episode of What If…? This will include a similar mix of unusual characters from the wider MCU such as Shan-Chi, Katy, The Mandarin, Skrulls and Ms Marvel. It will be a more mature animated show but isn’t due for a while.
Eyes of Wakanda expands upon the legacy of Black Panther and delves into the history of the secretive African nation. It will also feature K’un-Lun and its protector, Iron Fist. The series will introduce new characters and is part of the MCU canon, so will expand upon the stories and characters featured in the Black Panther films.
Following the massive success of X-Men ’97, the series will continue with new episodes. The first series picked up where the original 90’s animation ended and featured many of the iconic X-Men characters. The second season of the rebooted show will include new characters including Polaris, Havok, Apocalypse, and Danger. The main X-Men team are expected to be kitted out in new outfits similar in design to those worn during Grant Morrison’s comic book run. These are similar to those used in the X-Men First Class film.
Finally, Spider-Man returns in animated form in the Disney+ series, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. This will be similar to the comics as opposed to the recent Spider-Man films and feature many of Spidey’s classic friends and foes in their iconic comic book styles. These include Doc Ock, Norman Osborn, Daredevil and Doctor Strange.
