76279: Spider-Man Race Car & Venom Green Goblin Set Review

I’ve never fully understood why a teenager from New York, with the power of a spider, would need such an extensive collection of spider-themed vehicles. But one thing for sure is they certainly offer great inspiration for various LEGO® sets and the latest to be released is the Spider-Man Race Car. A running trend of recent Marvel sets seems to be the creeping menace of the alien symbiote Venom. Along with infecting other Marvel characters such as Groot and Doc Ock, this set features the combined evils of Venom and the Green Goblin. Here’s a slightly delayed look at the newly released Spider-Man Race Car and Venom Green Goblin set.

When rumours of a LEGO Spider-Man car first surfaced, I thought the LEGO Design Team were delving into the Spider-Verse and widening the spider crew with some of the more obscure spider variants. Unfortunately, the LEGO Spider-Man Car doesn’t recreate Peter Parkedcar, the sentiment buggy car from Earth-53931. Instead, it offers a spider-themed race car, which may not be as cool but it’s still a fun set, especially for the younger LEGO fans.

The build begins by creating Green Goblin’s glider. Along with the minifigure, the Goblin Glider has also been infected by Venom. So instead of the usual green and purple colour scheme, the glider is made up of white and black elements. It also includes a couple of stud shooters, to offer an additional play feature.

The car is certainly spider-themed, with the red and blue colours matching those of Spider-Man. To truly connect the car to the web-slinger, it also features a couple of printed pieces. Yes, the set does not use any stickers, which is a nice bonus. So there’s a sloped piece used on the bonnet, which features the spider symbol. Along each side of the car are a pair of printed NEXO shields which feature a webbed pattern.

The large slopes canopy pieces, give the car a modern look and also offer enough room to seat two minifigures inside. Plus there is ample space at the rear of the car to store the skateboard. Despite not being a sentient car, which once had its oil change infiltrated by a radioactive spider (I have no idea how Peter Parkedcar got its powers), the car does almost feature a face. The prominent placement of two stud shooters on the front of the car kinda looks like eyes.

The set includes a trio of minifigures, no surprise that one of those is Spider-Man and this particular version has appeared in many other sets. The same can be said for the Ghost Spider minifigure, although she is a little less common than Spider-Man. It would be nice to have some variety from these mainstay characters. There is no reason why both these minifigures couldn’t offer something different or unique whilst still having recognisable characters. Thankfully, Green Goblin is unique and is one of a handful of Marvel characters to be infected with the alien symbiote Venom. This is represented by a unique torso and head, which features partly Venomized patches. I can only assume Venom’s recent appearance in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PlayStation can be attributed to the character’s recent LEGO prominence.

Despite the missed opportunity to bring Peter Parkedcar to life with LEGO bricks. Not to mention the questionable need for a superhero, who can swing through New York on webs, to have a car, it’s an interesting set. It’s a great companion piece to Miles Morales’ car, released last year. I’m not entirely sure why so many sets are featuring Venomized elements, but they certainly offer unique minifigures. It’s a shame the same can’t be said for Spider-Man. With the Web-Slinger featured in so many sets, it would be nice to have a few more variants of the character. The same goes for Ghost Spider, many more spider characters could have taken her place. But these are things which would please older LEGO fans, for the younger builders this is just a fun-looking race car which can fire studs across the room.
