The LEGO® Art theme continues to provide unusual sets which offer something different to other LEGO sets. It’s also a theme which draws the attention of those who may not be LEGO fans. The LEGO Art sets began as simple mosaic-style displayable images but have evolved to create textured pieces of art inspired by pop culture. When this set was first rumoured, I expected it to be a cross between the Botanical Collection and the Van Gogh Ideas set. I was way off, so here’s a closer look at the Macaw Parrots set which is the first set in a new LEGO Art spin-off, dubbed The Fauna Collection.

Most of the previous LEGO Art sets have encased brick-built artwork within a frame. The Macaw Parrots ditches the frame but still offers the ability to display the builds on a wall. There are two parrots included in the set, a pale yellow one sitting on a branch and a pale pink one with its wing extended in flight. Unlike other LEGO Art sets, this used a lot of bricks and slopes to create the shapes of each bird. Although the branch with the yellow parrot edges into the realms of LEGO Botanical Collection sets.

Of the two parrots, the yellow one is the simplest in design. The branch does add a little more detail, thanks to the small white and pink flowers along with the pale blue leaves but the actual parrot side of things is fairly easy to construct. Thanks to the layering of the sections which make up the body, it gives the build a little texture. The yellow parrot can be displayed on a wall using a single Technic hook.
The pink parrot is a little more involved thanks to its wings. Each feather is built and added individually, as these are crafted from bluish-green elements, which helps them stand out, especially against the pale pink. The wings and tail are also mounted behind the body of the parrot. This helps to hide the points of connection but as with the yellow parrot, it gives them essentially flat build some definition. The pink parrot can be mounted on a wall using two Technic hooks.
Despite the impressive visual impact of the set, especially when displayed on a wall, the yellow parrot suffers from a noticeable discrepancy in the colour of the pale yellow elements. It’s not as noticeable from a distance, so if they are hung on the wall, you can’t tell, but up close the different shading of some of the bricks is obvious. This isn’t an issue with the build of the set more of a quality control issue. Apart from that, it’s an interesting set, it has an 80s vibe to it, which I think is due to the colouring of the parrots. It’s also a set which can only be displayed on a wall, unlike other Art sets, you wouldn’t get away with leaning this against something.
The LEGO Art: The Fauna Collection – Macaw Parrots set will be available from January 1st, 2024 and joins the likes of the Amazing Spider-Man and Modern Art sets.
