For the second year running, I’ve been given the opportunity to take a look at the LEGO® Marvel Advent Calendar. Last year’s Advent Calendar was inspired by the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. This year’s release is a little more generic and is focused on the Avengers and The Infinity Saga. As with all of the LEGO Advent Calendars, there are 24 doors to open from December 1st. Each one features a different LEGO goody such as a minibuild, minifigure or accessories.
Before you read on, this review will include spoilers for the upcoming LEGO Marvel Avengers Advent Calendar. I won’t be revealing which builds appear on which days but it will feature each of the 24 buildable items and minifigures, you’ll find in the Advent Calendar. If you prefer to be completely surprised on December 1st, I advise you not to read on any further.

If you’ve been counting down to Christmas with the LEGO Advent Calendars over the years, you’ll be aware of the changes to the packaging. The outer box remains the same, with a flip-up lid which becomes a play area. Under flaps of each of the daily builds, you find a simple mock-up of the build. You can also find the same images on the LEGO Builder app or from the LEGO Instructions portal. The inner tray of the set has changed again this year. The tray was previously plastic, before becoming a pulp cardboard tray. Last year, the days were split with a flimsy grid of cardboard strips. This year, the strips return but are now enclosed in a cardboard tray. Making it recyclable but far better than last year’s attempt.
There are seven minifigures featured in this year’s Advent Calendar. They include of mix of characters previously featured in other Marvel sets along with two exclusives. Doctor Strange has appeared in five other sets and his magic cloak is included as a gift in another window. Okoye has appeared in two sets. Iron Man, Wong and Captain America all appear in one other set. Black Widow and Spider-Man are both unique thanks to their festive torsos. Black Widow is wearing an Avengers Christmas jumper. Spider-Man’s jumper is the better of the two thanks to the spidey pattern of the front and the Spider-Man logo on the back.
Along with the minifigures, some of the daily offerings feature elements that can combined with other aspects of the calendar. So there’s a jetpack, a hockey kit, a Christmas tree and a base, plus golden web accessories. Unfortunately, this does make some of the daily offerings a little disappointing on their own.
Other builds are a little more substantial such as buildable bits of scenery which appear to be inspired by Stark’s workshop. Some of these can be connected together and have a festive twist such as a fireplace or a wrapping paper station. There are also a couple of festive builds, including a Loki rocking chair, snowman, Iron Man-inspired reindeer and even a festive Quinjet.
The LEGO Marvel Avengers Advent Calendar will be available from September 1st, along with others inspired by LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO City and LEGO Friends. Stay tuned from December 1st for a daily recap of all four LEGO Advent Calendars
