76415: The Battle Of Hogwarts Review

For the past few years, various sections of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry have been recreated across a number of different LEGO® sets. Many of those have been inspired by key moments from the various Harry Potter films. They can also be connected together to craft a larger version of the iconic magical school. The latest set to expand Hogwarts is one of only a couple of sets to be inspired by the darker Deathly Hallows films. The Battle of Hogwarts introduces a few new elements and a unique line-up of characters, so here’s a closer look at the set.

As the Harry Potter films reached their climax with the two-part Deathly Hallows films, things had become a little darker than the early years of Potter and friends. This has seen fewer sets inspired by those later films, mainly due to the darker tones of the stories. So this set is one of only a handful of sets based on the Deathly Hallows.

During the battle in the grounds of the school, much of Hogwarts lies in ruin, reduced to rubble by magic spells and mythic creatures. This destruction means the location of the battle isn’t as visually unique as some of the other Hogwarts sets. The building is also built in sections. This modular design could be taken in two ways, firstly it allows the set to be combined with other Hogwarts sets. Secondly, the fact it can be broken down into some quite small sections could represent the ability to recreate battle damage. It can also be reconfigured from a courtyard to a bridge, although there is little guidance on this in the set instructions. The courtyard form features a pair of arch-filled walls and a central tower-like section. This is where most of the set’s detail can be found such as a doorway, clock and fireplace.

It’s one of a number of sets inspired by sections of Hogwarts Castle which can be connected together to create a larger version of the school. Adding this set to others including Hospital Wing, Chamber of Secrets, Room of Requirement and Dumbledore’s Office as well as other sets in the range, allows you to craft a minifigure-scale version of Hogwarts. Doing so would require a lot of space and doesn’t come cheap. But it’s a fun feature to bring all the different sets together.

During the moments that have inspired this set, there are quite a few characters on screen meaning there are many who could have featured in the set. Obviously, Harry and Voldemort are included and they are unique versions, with Voldemort featuring sand green robes. The other characters include Neville Longbottom who uses the Sword of Gryffindor to vanquish Nagini. Molly Weasley is included to recreate the moment she defeats Bellatrix Lestrange. I’d say this is the best version of Bellatrix, thanks to the dual-moulded arms. Finally, Scabior is featured in minifigure form for the first time. It’s not a character I’m familiar with but I love the outfit on the minifigure.

The set also introduces a series of new elements known as ‘spell casts’ these are similar to the ‘power blast’ elements featured in some of the superhero sets. They can be connected to the new wand elements, which have a 1×1 clear stud fixed to the end of it and a slightly different handle so it can be held pointing forward by a minifigure. There are 6 elements, each featured in both green and red. They add an extra layer of detail to the set and characters.

Overall

The minifigure line-up is great especially as they are all unique versions of the characters. I also like the new ‘spell-casting’ elements but overall the set isn’t my thing. I appreciate it’s inspired by an important moment from the films but the actual building doesn’t offer much on its own, especially compared to some of the other locations represented in a similar style. The modular nature of the set is a fun idea but also makes the building a little prone to falling apart. It would have also been helpful if the instructions gave a little more guidance on creating different configurations of the building as not all the holes and Technic pins line up. I think the set offers more when combined with other Hogwarts sets than it does on its own, it’s the minifigures and magic effect elements which offer the biggest draw. That concludes my review of the latest LEGO Harry Potter set releases, as mentioned in previous reviews, I wasn’t expecting to review these but they were unexpectedly delivered by The LEGO Group.
