When LEGO® 2KDRIVE launched earlier this year, it featured digital recreations of several LEGO vehicles from various LEGO themes including LEGO City, LEGO Speed Champions, LEGO Creator and even LEGO Friends. Now you can build vehicles inspired by the open-world LEGO racer, with a trio of upcoming LEGO City sets. Each set features vehicles which will soon be available to play as in LEGO 2KDRIVE. In this new LEGO set review, I’ll be taking a look at the Modified Race Cars.

Each of these upcoming LEGO City sets which are inspired by LEGO 2KDRIVE also focuses on different aspects of the game’s play features. With the Monster Truck Race set showcasing the creativity of the game and the Combo Race Pack highlighting the games’ different vehicle types, this set focuses on power-ups which can be picked up when racing around Bricklandia. As you take part in races or explore the open worlds of the game, you can activate boosts, fire weapons and even take the skies with special jetpacks.
The set features two vehicles, a chunky Off-Road Rally Car and a sleeker Sports Car. Both are unique builds but they each have the ability to add one of three sets of power+up. This function is almost the same as the customisation options featured in the LEGO City Emergency Vehicles HQ set released earlier this year. So both vehicles have a 1×2 shaft brick on each side, which can be used as a connection point to add the power-ups. These include a pair of booster jets, a pair of missile launchers, complete with flick missile bolts and a pair of propellers. Despite the ability to attach them all to both of the vehicles, they look like part of them when added. Both vehicles also have the ability to remove the rear and front bumpers, technically this means can be switched between the two cars, but as the colouring is different, they look very odd.
The green-coloured vehicle is a sort of off-road rally car, with thicker types and a hatchback design. The green colouring of the body of the car looks great against the shiny silver elements. It also has a great transparent green windshield element. It’s not often that sets feature these elements in different colours.
The Sports Car is far more futuristic looking than the Rally Car is. This is not only due to the car’s slimmer design but the black, blue and pink elements also give it a modern feel. The futuristic flare is finished off with 2×2 round tiles capping each of the wheels. Similar to the Rally Car, the Sports Car also features a coloured windscreen element.
The minifigures are the least important part of the set in all honesty. Both characters are wearing similar race suits, with the colouring different on each. Oddly one racer has a similar colour scheme to the Sports Car whereas the other one doesn’t. Both have either a black helmet to wear or the option to swap them out for hair instead.
Overall
It’s another fun set, with the playability of the changeable power-ups offering something unique. I like the build of the Rally Car over the Sports Car, but then the Sports Car looks the coolest out of the two sets. Both of the vehicles feel like they belong in the game as well as feel part of the LEGO City theme. They could be considered a little plain looking but I like the fact they haven’t been plastered with stickers. Instead, the detail comes from the use of elements and colour. It’s also a set which has a connection with another of the LEGO 2KDRIVE sets but more on that in my next review.
