60395: Combo Race Pack Set Review

When LEGO® 2KDRIVE launched earlier this year, it featured digital recreations of a number of LEGO vehicles from various LEGO themes including LEGO City, LEGO Speed Champions, LEGO Creator and even LEGO Friends. Now you can build vehicles inspired by the open-world LEGO racer, with a trio of upcoming LEGO City sets. Each set features vehicles which will soon be available to play as in LEGO 2KDRIVE. Ahead of the set’s release next month here’s an early look at the LEGO 2KDRIVE-inspired Combo Race Pack set.

As LEGO 2KDRIVE is an open-world racer set across a number of different worlds, it features a variety of landscapes and biomes. This has seen the game implement a unique vehicle-transforming ability so you can traverse roads, off-road and water with ease. This sets represents the game’s three vehicle types – a Sports Car for roads, an SUV for off-roading and a Speed Boat to glide across the water.

This is another set which includes a feature introduced in another recent LEGO City. All three vehicles are built in three sections – the body, the back and the front. With all three sections clipped together, they create the complete vehicle. The exact same customisation feature was first seen in the LEGO City Custom Car Garage set.

Despite the set featuring three different types of vehicles, they all include the same connection points on the front and back of the main body sections, as well as on the pieces which form the rear and front of the sets. This allows you to switch the sections around and create what can only be described as a ‘Franken-vehicle’. Due to each car being built in one of three primary colours, they obviously clash when mixed around plus the vastly different style of vehicles, also means any switching of sections results in some weird-looking creations. Which I’m sure kids will delight in.

The set actually becomes even more fun when combing it will another of the LEGO 2KDRIVE-inspired sets. As well as featuring the clip sections on the front and back of the vehicles, they also in the 1×2 shaft bricks. These also appear in the Modified Race Cars set. But unlike that set, there’s nothing to clip onto them. But you can take the boost rockets, hoover packs and bolt-blaster power-up from set 60396 and add them to the vehicles in this set and they instantly make the Combo vehicles 100% more fun.

The set features three minifigures, they are a little reminiscent of the Shadow Racer Team members from the game but are basically just random racers. They all use the same torso and legs but have different heads and different-coloured helmets.

Overall

The ability to create different combinations of the vehicles is certainly interesting but due to the colours used and the different types of vehicles, the combos look very odd. Due to the simplistic nature of each vehicle, the set doesn’t feel as exciting as the other two 2KDRIVE sets. However, adding the power-up sections from the Modified Race Cars set makes them way more fun. It’s actually a shame, these add-ons were not included in the set. It will be interesting to see these and the other LEGO 2KDRIVE builds in the game, but it’s currently unclear how they will be implicated in the game. The Combo Race Pack set will be available from August 1st.
