Buildable LEGO® figures were all the rage a few years ago, the concept formed the basis of the Bionicle sets and has been used to create characters from Star Wars, DC Comics and Marvel. The concept was resurrected in 2022 with a number of characters from the Spider-Man universe and MCU. The latest character to be transformed into a buildable figure is Ant-Man. It’s become the norm for MCU movies to inspire various LEGO sets, but for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, only this set has been created. After seeing the film, I can see why it was chosen to go with a buildable character instead of the usual playset. Ahead of the set’s release on May 1st, here’s a closer look at the LEGO Marvel Ant-Man Construction Figure.

Ant-Man is pretty unique when it comes to LEGO sets, as the character has appeared in many forms aping the changing scale of the character from the MCU films. Ant-Man has been a microfig, a minifigure, a brick-built figure and now he’s a construction figure. This style of buildable characters has previously seen Spider-Man, Venom, Miles Morales and Iron Man recreated on the same scale. However, for Ant-Man it can represent different forms – normal size with Wasp shrunken down to miniature scale or giant size, with the Wasp being normal size in comparison.
The figure has numerous points of articulation including the feet, knees, waist, arms and legs. This allows for a wide range of motion. Although the shoulder plates due limit how far the arms can be raised and the legs are overly flexible near the waist section. Obviously, it features a few Technic elements to help create the jointed connections, but unlike previous buildable figures, it also uses more standard LEGO elements. There are also a couple of unique printed pieces including the NEXO shields used on the arms, a 2×2 round plate on the chest and the curved plate used for the helmet. Unlike the other recent LEGO Marvel buildable figures, Ant-Man’s helmet is far more elaborate. With additional elements added to create the breather tech, which surrounds it.
Finally, the set also includes a microfig version of the Wasp. This can be connected to Ant-Man arm via a minifigure display peg by removing the 1×2 bullion plate. It would have made more sense to include Scott Lang’s daughter in her quantum suit, but the piece is so small it wouldn’t make too much difference.
Overall
When compared to the past Marvel and other buildable figures, these new versions look much better. This is, in part, due to new elements helping to craft a slimmer build but also due to the characters being chosen to become buildable figures. So far they have all had helmets or covered heads and this works nicely for the overall appearance of the character. Ant-Man obviously has a more complex helmet compared to the Spider-folk and Iron Man suit, but the additional elements used to create it pair well with the unique printed helmet plate. I like the addition of a microfig as it helps to play with the scale of the set. The only downside of the set is when it’s been released. It should have launched around the same time the movie hit cinemas, the excitement around the film was already low, and despite it being a fun film, now it’s almost non-existent.
