After taking a look at the intriguing-looking Team Spidey’s Mobile Headquarters set, today I’ll be taking a look at the Green Goblin Lighthouse set. This is also part of the 4+ range, which is aimed at younger builders and offers easier-to-build sets, plus unique elements and minifigures. The overall theme takes its inspiration from the animated Spider-Man Disney Channel/Disney+ show which puts iconic Marvel characters in a colourful world of superhero adventures. One of the key features of the 4+ sets is Starter Bricks. These are unique elements which are often used as a base to create buildings or vehicles. The idea is to make the building process a little easier. Yet this set doesn’t actually feature any Starter Bricks or unique pieces for that matter. However, the set does include some interesting other pieces. Another key draw of 4+ sets is the lack of stickers, instead elements are printed. Most of the printed elements can be found on the Lighthouse, with my favourite piece being used as a computer screen.
Although it lacks unique bricks, it still follows the simpler build process, with the set split into sections. These include a very simple beach area and a rather too ‘neat’ shipwreck. Both of these sections are linked by a curve of roller coaster rails and the lighthouse. I’m assuming the blue rails are actually meant to represent the sea, with a coaster car base acting as a raft.
The Lighthouse is quite basic and apart from being a tower structure, it lacks the traditional light on the top, instead featuring the Green Goblin’s pumpkin symbol on a sphere canopy. Some of the elements used to construct the tower feature print detail. The base is built separately from the tower and includes a small room through which the sea/rail passes through. It’s not as simple a build as other 4+ sets I’ve built, but it still looks fairly basic in places. This is definitely the case with the two extremely small vehicles. One is the Goblin’s hoverboard and the other is a Ghost Spider’s jet-ski.
Another aspect of the 4+ sets which appeal to those, not in the intended age range is the minifigures. Oddly, Spider-Man isn’t included instead two of his spider-themed chums take his place along with two classic villains. Despite being the title character, Green Goblin has appeared in two other sets making him the most common. Sandman is all-new and although it has traits of past versions, this one feels a little more ‘comic booky’ with his belt adorned with an ‘S’ and a little more trimmings compared to others. The single sandy-coloured arm has worked perfectly before and makes a return here.
Both Miles and Gwen feature heavily in the Spidey and his Amazing Friends sets and both versions are unique to this set. Although Ghost-Spider might seem like other versions with the addition of a diving helmet, the torso is slightly different. Miles is also sporting a diving dome but is wearing a mostly red suit compared to his usual red and black livery. They aren’t the exciting selection of minifigures, but at least they offer mostly unique variants.
Overall
Although rather simple looking, the set doesn’t feel like other 4+ sets due to the lack of unique elements. It does, however, continue the tradition of uniquely printed pieces and special variants of minifigures. I wouldn’t say this is as appealing as some of the other Marvel 4+ sets, to both kids or collectors. Firstly, apart from the coaster track, it lacks play functions and although three of the four characters provide unique versions, they aren’t vastly different from those found in other Marvel sets.
