The LEGO® Minifigure is one of the most recognisable icons of the LEGO Group. Introduced in 1978, the minifigure has become an important part of the LEGO ecosystem, helping to inject life into LEGO sets and more recently, allowing people to see themselves on the toys they play with or collect. There are many special rules surrounding the minifigure, this is partly to help them stay protected by various trademarks. But that hasn’t stopped them from appearing in slightly different forms. As shown by the most recently released LEGO House Limited Edition set which has transformed Captain Redbeard into a large-scale buildable figure. But this isn’t the first time the minifigure has been recreated as a buildable figure. Here’s a look at some of the other LEGO sets which have featured buildable ‘minifigures’.
76051: Super Heroes Airport Battle
One of the first brick-built figures to match the style of its smaller counterpart, appeared in the LEGO Marvel set inspired by Captain America: Civil War. This saw the various Marvel heroes, which included Ant-Man. As well as shrinking down to the size of an ant, Scott Lang could go super-sized. This was recreated by a buildable version of the Ant-Man minifigure.
76075: Wonder Woman Warrior Battle
It would once again fall to the Super Heroes theme to showcase the next brick-built minifigure. This time from DC and Woman Wonder. The warrior princess battled the mythical deity, Ares. Although Ares wasn’t as big as Ant-Man became, its larger scale worked to show the slight size difference between it and Diana.
4002018: Santa & Reindeer
The next brick-built minifigure, is probably the rarest as it was included in the 2018 Christmas Employee Gift, given as a thank-you to employees and associates of the LEGO Group. This celebrated the 40th anniversary of the minifigure, with a large-scale sleigh pulled by a reindeer and driven by a brick-built Santa minifigure.
70669: Cole’s Earth Driller
Continuing the trend of featuring one brick-built minifigure a year, 2019 welcomed a giant Stone Warrior brick-built minifigure. This followed the same design as previous brick-built minifigures but tweaked it to include two sets of arms. To match the style of Stone Warriors, this brick-built character was the most elaborate.
75967: Forbidden Forest: Umbridge’s Encounter
Another great use of the brick-built minifigure’s larger scale could be found in the 2020 Harry Potter set. As Umbridge forces Harry and Hermione into the Forbidden Forest, Grawp the giant comes to their aid. The brick-built minifigure was the perfect scale for Hagrid’s half-brother.
76393: Harry Potter & Hermione Granger
Sticking with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, this 2021 set introduced a completely new scale of brick-built minifigure. It featured two buildable characters, standing at around 26cm tall. Not only did Harry and Hermione match the style of their minifigure counterparts, but these giant figures also had the same points of articulation including moving legs, arms and hands.
40504: A Minifigure Tribute
The larger scale introduced with the Harry Potter set has acted as the basis for the latest LEGO House exclusive set. Using the same scale and a similar design, the set transforms the legendary Captain Redbeard into a large-scale displayable minifigure. Making it a great tribute to the much-loved minifigure and its 45th anniversary.
