Yoshi is probably the most famous friendly companion of Mario. The character was introduced in Super Mario World and has since become a mainstay of the Mario games. The Yoshi have appeared in a couple of sets but this is only the second to be dedicated to the long-tongued dinosaur. This Expansion Set takes its inspiration from the games in general as opposed to being based on an exact location or level of the Super Mario series, although it’s very similar to the area where Yoshi lives in Super Mario World. Here’s a closer look at Yoshi’s Gift House.

With over 30 sets of varying sizes, it’s to be expected that some of the LEGO Super Mario range will offer a little repetition and that’s partly the case with this Expansion Set. This set is quite similar to the Mario’s House & Yoshi set from the first wave of LEGO Super Mario Sets. As the Yoshi are wild creatures, their dwellings are a little more natural with a couple of trees featuring structures including a fireplace and bed. It has elements of a similar location from Super Mario World but has been tweaked to fit in with the connectable style of the LEGO Super Mario sets as well as being able to include different play elements.
Yoshi’s home is created from four buildable sections. They include a tree with a bed, a doorway, a tree with a fireplace and a Trat Carousel. The ways the trees are built, make them look exactly like they do in Super Mario World. The tree with the bed also has a section for a piece of fruit to be placed. The Doorway is the least detailed of the section of the set but does have a printed tile with Yoshi’s name on it and is also where the Yoshi Action Brick is found. The fireplace tree features a simple play feature, which can be used to drop a piece of golden fruit. The final section is called a Treat Carousel and one of the interactive figures can be connected to it and then when it’s turned they gain various bonuses.
There are two buildable characters featured in this Expansion Set. Unsurprisingly, one of them is Yoshi, with this being the second time the original green Yoshi has appeared in a set. It’s a shame a different colour wasn’t included, just to expand the clan a little more. As with all Yoshi characters, it is built in exactly the same way but does swap the 2 round quarter tiles for the new half round tile, which does look better. Yoshi is joined by Monty Mole, marking his first appearance since 2020.
The Peach wave of sets includes a new power-up element in the form of fruit. There’s a red version and a gold version, with both featuring an Action Brick. If scanned by one of the interactive figures, they can ‘eat’ the fruit by tipping the character forward or they can be given to other characters by scanning their Action Bricks. This gives you a nice coin bonus. Other Action Bricks can be found on the section where Yoshi stands, on Monty Mole, on a Gift Box and on the Treat Carousel.
