These are defined as small plants with thick fleshy leaves to help retain moisture. In nature this makes them thrive in dry conditions, in the home it makes them great for people who may not be considered green-fingered. But even if you can’t keep alive plants that need very little watering, the LEGO Succulents will look vibrant and lush all year round. With Succulents being such small plants, the set features a collection of 9 different ones. Each offers a unique build and they can also be built simultaneously with up to two other people. As well as focusing on sets aimed at older LEGO fans, some recent LEGO sets are also offering the ability to be built with others. This set is split into three numbered steps, each with its own instruction booklet. This allows the set to be built by three people at the same time. Each of the build steps focuses on a trio of plants, resulting in 9 different plants in total. On some of the pages, you’ll find facts about the plant being built or elements being used to create it.
Each plant begins by creating its container pot. These are 6×6 cubic pots and they all have a series of Technic pin bricks. These not only offer a basic pattern on the pot but also a point to connect them all together. You can combine the pots in any configuration you like and there are extra Technic axle pins, which are stored inside the plant’s pots.
Every one of the plants offers a different build experience and some use LEGO elements in unusual ways. Highlights include Forestmen Hats used as leaves on the Sempervivum plant. Recoloured dinosaur eggs make the perfect Burro’s Tail buds and buildable figure shoulder pads as Lavender Echeveria petals. Not as impressive as the petal on the Orchid but still fun. Others are a little more traditional in terms of their construction. But regardless of the elements used to create all 9 of the Succulents, they all do a neat job of capturing the appearance of real-world plants.
Some of the Succulents included in the set are an Orange Echeveria, an Aloe plant, a Lavender Echeveria, a Moon Catcus, a Ball Cactus, a Burro’s Tail and a Red Echeveria. The other two are not named in the instructions or product description but appear to be members of the Sempervivum family. The LEGO Botanical Collection Succulents will be available from May 1st alongside the amazing Orchid set.
Review Round-up
They may not offer an in-depth build experience but the overall set offers a unique addition to the Botanical Collection. Some of the plants are a little more involved than others but that’s to be expected with 9 different plants. The pots are also a little simplistic but they fit the style of the plants. Maybe if some of the pots were different heights than the others that could have added a little more dimension to the set. It’s certainly not the best of the Botanical Collection sets but it does show the range can offer plenty of uniqueness.
