One of the largest of the officially revealed LEGO® Jurassic World sets is T. rex & Atrociraptor Dinosaur Breakout. This large-scale set features two dinosaurs including an all-new species along with a transportation truck and a market building. The set can also be combined with the Atrociraptor Bike Chase set to create a larger playset. But how does the set on its own shape up and are the dinosaurs a worthy addition to your collection? Here’s a look at set 76948: T. rex & Atrociraptor Dinosaur Breakout. One of many different sets in which dinosaurs breakout!

The mighty T. rex is an impressive LEGO creature and has appeared in a number of sets. Yet each one is different, with a different blend of colours or patterns on them. The T. rex in this set has a lighter coloured underbelly with grey and brown patterning across the back, legs and head. It’s also a lot more textured compared to some of the earlier LEGO T. rex figures. You’ll notice scale-like patterning around the jaw and body, which gives it a nice finish.
The second dinosaur is another new species for the Jurassic World theme dubbed the Atrociraptor. This is a real species of dinosaur and as the name suggests, similar to the Velociraptors. In the upcoming Jurassic World sequel, the Atrociraptors will form a rival squad of ‘tamed’ dinos, similar to Blue, Delta, Charlie and Echo. This new team of raptors features two males and two females, with the orange-coloured one being male. So the Atrociraptor in this set is a male and is a similar design to some of the other smaller dinosaurs. So it’s a single moulded creature, with a moveable jaw. Although it lacks the ability to pose, the style of the species seems to work for this sort of design choice.
The set is made up of two components – a transportation truck and a ‘building’ which is described as a market. The Truck is a cool-looking vehicle, which is split into three sections. There is a small platform that slides into the back of the truck. The back of the truck is also a separate container that can be detached from the bed of the truck. Then there’s the main structure of the truck. The whole thing looks sturdy enough to contain a dinosaur or two. In fact, the removable plate is designed to hold two Atrociraptors, that includes one from the companion set. The only thing I’m not a fan of is the colour scheme. The orange on the cab feels a little out of place compared to the rest of the vehicle. Unless it’s connected to a company or organisation, in which case a sticker to represent them would have made sense. In fact, the cab of the truck gives me M.A.S.K vibes.
As mentioned above the product description for the set suggests the building is some sort of market. Now, this could be a ‘cattle’ market where dinosaurs are sold similar to farm livestock, which ties to the events from Fallen Kingdom. Or it could be just a location, as the trailers show dinosaurs in, what appears to be a warm European country. The structure is a sort of pen combined with ruins. It’s also built in such a way that it can be smashed up, should a certain dinosaur feel the need to breakout. It’s rather plain, except for a small table featuring some bones, eggs and amber chunks. This part of the set can be combined with another set (Atrociraptor Dinosaur: Bike Chase) to create a much bigger marketplace. But even on its own, it offers a unique play area.
An unfortunate trait of the Jurassic World sets is the fairly generic minifigures. However, that’s not entirely the case here. All four minifigures are all named characters with Chris Pratt’s Owen, looking exactly the same as his previous versions, it’s a shame his appearance wasn’t refreshed to offer something new. Claire has a slightly different look, with longer hair mixed with a fairly generic outfit.
The other characters are brand new and yet to be revealed in any of the trailers. But their minifigures are interesting, particularly Rainn Dalacourt who has a nicely detailed torso, with the design flowing over to the legs and special mention must go to the snakehead tattoo he has on his face, which I at first thought was a radio mic. Soyona Santo also has an interesting outfit, with her top spreading onto the legs, unfortunately, the white of the clothing on the legs is washed out due to being printed on a black surface, making it appear more grey than white. It’s assumed these two characters are bad guys or at the very least – rather shady.
Review Round-up
It’s difficult to critique a set based on a movie when the movie has yet to be released. But it’s clearly based on an important moment from Jurassic World Dominion. The dinosaurs are nice, especially the smaller Atrociraptor, as this offers a new species. The T. rex is also different enough to pique the interest of those who collect them. The rest of the set offers enough playability to keep younger builders entertained both during its construction and through playing with it. I like the design of the truck just not the colour scheme it uses. I also like that the set can be expanded with the addition of another set. However, it’s a costly set on its own.
For
+ Interesting Minifigures
+ An all-new dinosaur as well as a re-coloured T. rex
+ Truck is quite meaty
Against
– Colours used on the truck feel odd
– Truck also needed more stickers (yes really)
