76219: Spider-Man & Green Goblin Mech Battle Set Review

In 2020, the LEGO® Marvel theme introduced a new series of sets dubbed Mech Suits. These gave popular Marvel characters their own themed mechs and the most prolific of those characters is Spider-Man. So far Spidey and his chums have inspired three different mech sets and this latest LEGO Marvel set takes the total up to four, it also adds another Mech Armour double pack. This time Spider-Man faces off against one of his oldest foes – the Green Goblin. So here’s a closer look at the Spider-Man & Green Goblin Mech Battle set.

76219: Spider-Man & Green Goblin Mech Battle Set Review

Although a double pack, the Mech Armor Suits follow the same design as the single sets. They are also themed around their various characters, with the colour schemes and printed elements relevant to their classic appearances. Despite the slight differences between both characters’ mechs, they have similar points of articulation and an area within the chest to slot the minifigure pilot. The Spider-Man Mech Armour is slightly more robust compared to Green Goblin’s. Spidey’s previous mechs have mostly used red, blue and white elements, but this one is a lot darker with white dropped in favour of black. This actually makes sense as those colours match Spider-Man’s costume, at least in this set. The key difference with this version of Spider-Man’s Mech Armor is the arms. They have oddly long forearms, almost ape-like, which do look a little awkward if I’m honest. They also hampers the ability to pose the set, in the same way, as other Mech Suits.

Green Goblin’s Mech Armor is a little more ‘traditional’ compared to Spider-Man’s. Firstly, it has normal arms, with the use of claw elements on the hands adding to the menacing look associated with the Green Goblin. The arms also feature a pair of the new style stud shooters. These are mounted on the shoulders and can fire orange 1×1 round tiles, obviously representing the Goblin’s infamous pumpkin grenades, it’s a shame they don’t have any print detail on them. Although I prefer the more meaty feet, the narrow ones on this mech fit the style of the characters, as does the use of two different greens mixed with the purple elements.

As the name of the set suggests, the minifigures included are Spider-Man and Green Goblin. Both have previously been featured in other recent sets, although they aren’t exactly the same. Green Goblin uses the same top half as the one featured in the Daily Bugle and Attack on the Spider Lair sets. The only unfortunate difference is the lack of print on the legs, a trait that also blights Spider-Man. He also has the same top half as the Spider-Man in the sets mentioned above, but in the Daily Bugle set, he has simple but effective dual-moulded legs. These are unfortunately missing here, however, the ability to get a version of Green Goblin in a much cheaper set is appreciated.

The fact the set features two mechs does offer greater scope for play, not to mention some epic poses. Although this set wasn’t affected by the ‘stability issues’ the joints for the legs match the style of the redesigned single mechs as well as previous Marvel mechs.

Review Round-up

Spider-Man is a popular character, but does it need a third Mech Armor set? The simple answer is no, although each one is quite different, I would much rather have another character given the chance to have their own set in its place. However, comparing the three different Spider-Man mechs, this is my favourite. The colours and overall style of it blend well, although I’m not a fan of the long arms. Green Goblin also offers a nice mech build, which nicely matches the character’s iconic appearance. I would have liked it if his hoverboard was incorporated in some way. The minifigures are nice, but I’m not a fan of downgrading the detail on the legs.

For

+ Unique printed pieces
+ Almost the best of all the Spider-Man mechs
+ Goblin’s Armour offers the most playability

Against

Yet another Spider-Man mech
Minifigures lack details compared to their equivalents versions in other sets
