The LEGO® City theme has been home to various element innovations over the years. Be they inclusive parts such as the wheelchair or guide dog harness or action elements such as magnets or net guns, many others pass under the radar. The latest new addition to the LEGO range is a flywheel-powered bike, which forms the basis of the LEGO City Stuntz sub-theme. This features a number of larger playsets as well as a series of collectable stunt performers. Although not all sets are currently available, two of the smaller Stunt Performer sets have been released and they are great fun, so here’s a closer look at them both.
The Stunt Performer packs include a Minifigure character and their motorbike. I assumed the mechanism which powers the bike would be a sort of pull-back and go type affair. Instead, you push it forward and this powers the rear wheel. What’s most impressive is just how far this simple force of motion can propel the bikes. This also ties into their ability to perform stunt actions. They can easily clear ramps and for one glorious moment, as one of them was blasting down my hallway, it hit a doormat and pulled a wheelie, only stopping to crash into a door. The play aspect of the new flywheel bikes is great fun and that’s from a 30-something LEGO fan, so I imagine younger builders will glean even more from them.
Although the core of the motorbike is the same, each character has a different style of bike. This is achieved by the shell of the bike and different rear wheels. Oddly Rocket Racer appears to have a different type of rear wheel compared to the imagery used on the box and some of the product shots. I’ve checked and both sets bike has the same element number so I’m even more confused.
The characters featured in the sets have been or will be featured in the LEGO City Adventures TV show. The first two are new characters, although one is actually a familiar face or at least a distant relative.
60298: Rocket Stunt Bike
Send kids’ play skywards with the flywheel-powered LEGO® City Rocket Stunt Bike (60298) toy playset, featuring an amazing stunt motorcycle and the high-flying LEGO City Adventures TV series character Rocket Racer – a perfect combination for spectacular stunt-show action.
Set Number: 60298 | Pieces: 14 | Minifigure: Rocket Racer | RRP: £6.99/$7.99/7.99€
Rocket Racer first appeared in the classic LEGO racing video game, LEGO Racers. Although this version looks a little different, he retains the iconic ‘RR’ logo. His outfit has a familiar stuntman vibe to it, with white, red and blue colours used. This is followed over to his bike, which is largely blue with the Rocket Racers logo printed on the side panels.
60297: Demolition Stunt Bike
Power up kids’ play with the flywheel-powered LEGO® City Demolition Stunt Bike (60297) toy playset, featuring a high-speed stunt motorcycle and the LEGO City Adventures TV series daredevil character Wallop – a perfect combination for crowd-thrilling stunt-show action.
Set Number: 60297 | Pieces: 12 | Minifigure: Wallop | RRP: £6.99/$7.99/7.99€
The second character is Wallop, a grizzled stunt performer with a flair for demolition. His outfit is more ragged compared to all the others. I particularly like the caution tape-like belt, which ties nicely to his crash helmet. He also has an amazing alternate face, one which is safe to assume shows Wallop’s fearlessness when it comes to stunts. Wallop’s bike is also different to Rockets, with the outer shell styled after an older type of bike.
