80018: Monkie Kid’s Cloud Bike Set Review

In this modern-day continuation of the Monkey King legend, vehicles play a key role in the struggle against good and evil. Monkie Kid has a number of vehicles to choose from, many of which are partly inspired by the Monkey King’s command of the clouds. These have included a Cloud Mech, Cloud Jet and Cloud Roaster, with the latest addition to line-up being the Cloud Bike. It’s the smallest set from the newly released wave of sets, in fact, it’s the smallest Monkie Kid set so far. So how does it shape up against the larger sets? Find out in my latest LEGO Monkie Kid set review.

The Build

The set features two small motorcycle-type vehicles. One themed around a Spider Goon and the other, Monkie Kid, along with a Spider Drone. Which is where the build begins. Spider Drones are featured in a number of the new sets and they all follow a similar design. The base design is built around a 2×2 bar frame, with new L clips used as the legs. Although it’s clearly inspired by a spider, it only has 6 legs. The only difference compared to other versions is the addition of two larger claw elements used in the two front legs. The random civilian included in the set can interact with the Spider Drone, thanks to a neck mounted connector, upon which the Spider Drone can be clipped.

Spindrax’s motorcycle is the most traditional looking of the two bikes. It has nice chunky wheels, which are framed by a couple of Technic beam bars. Much of the body of the motorcycle is purple in colour, to match that of the Spider Queen’s fleet. There’s a couple of stud shooters on either side of the bike, which blends into the headlights and almost makes them look like the multiple eyes of a spider.

The Cloud Bike looks very different from the bike-like detachable craft included with the Cloud Jet set. The body of the Cloud Bike is much wider and shorter than the others included in the set. This is particularly to incorporate two disc shooters, mounted in the base of the bike. A Technic rod sits between them both and can be moved from side to side to eject a 2×2 round tile. These don’t appear very often in sets especially when compared to stud shooters. I guess it’s because they are tricky to incorporate but they are more fun than stud shooters in my opinion. In its normal form, the Cloud Bike has the traditional two-wheel set-up. However, each wheel is actually split into two parts, which can be flipped apart and spread out to become four hover plates.

The Minifigures

The set includes three Minifigures which include two characters unique to this set. Monkie Kid is of course included and follows the new design introduced with the season 2 sets. I would have liked to have seen MK include a helmet or slightly different outfit to offer something a little more unique. Another member of the Spider Queen’s henchman crew is included. Spindrax is unique to this set and is kitted out in a black and purple outfit, which all the Spider Army crew wear a variant of. This is paired with a cool looking helmet. It’s the same element used for the most recent Iron Man helmet. This can be swapped out for a spiky hairpiece. She’s a cool little Minifigure, especially with the helmet on. Finally, a civilian character is included called Rui. She’s a fairly standard looking character, who is only jazzed up once the Spider Drone gets to grips with her. I still think she and other civilian characters could have been a little more unique.

Overall

It may be the smallest of all Monkie Kid sets beyond the Minifigure Accessory Pack, but it offers a decent slice of Monkie Kid action. The unique enemy character is certainly a bonus but it’s a shame MK and Rui don’t offer something a little more unique. I like the two different style bikes, especially the Spindrax’s and it just looks cool. MK’s offers something different and has more play elements compared to the other bike. It may not be the most exciting of the Monkie Kid sets but it offers a fun build and a set with plenty of playability.
