Today we’ve been joining in on all the 40th anniversary celebrations of LEGO® Minifigures. First introduced in 1978, the Minifigure has gone one to become a cultural icon and ambassador of the LEGO brand. Their appearance in the late 70s was a major turning point for the LEGO system of play, allowing kids (and adults) to fully project themselves into these mini plastic vessels. As much as LEGO bricks inspired kids to become engineers, architects and designers, minifigures have inspired countless kids to become firefighters, police officers and possibly the odd knight. They have also helped to reinforce the importance of play, by inspiring generations of kids, thanks the introduction of popular characters from worlds as varied as Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter and Disney. But 1978 wasn’t just the year the LEGO Minifigure sprang to life, there were a number of other key events to take place that year. Today I’ve received a copy of newly updated version of The LEGO Book from DK Books. This charts the entire history of the LEGO brand, including a fun timeline of dates. So what else occurred in 1978?
- The first ever LEGO play themes were introduced: LEGO Castle, LEGO Town & LEGO Space
- The first ever LEGO baseplates with road marking were released
- The LEGO Club was founded in the UK
- LEGO Japan was founded
- LEGO Minifigures appeared in the first LEGO sets
