76999: Super Sonic Vs. Egg Drillster Set Review

Dr Robotnik has a history of constructing various machines to inflict his evil plans. One such machine is the Egg Drillster, which first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. As the name would suggest, the Drillster features the ability to drill and is used by Dr Robotnik in one of these end-of-level battles with Sonic. It’s the latest of Robotnik’s creations to be recreated in LEGO form and appears alongside Super Sonic in the upcoming LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog set, Super Sonic vs. Egg Drillster. Here’s an early look at the new set.

The Drillster first appeared during the final level of Emerald Hill Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the SEGA Mega Drive. As with all of Dr Robotnik’s machines, it has a passing resemblance to its creator and can be split apart should a hasty escape be needed. This is exactly the case for its LEGO incarnation. The Drillster is a chunky buggy-like vehicle, with a large drill on the front. This is connected to a simple gear system, which makes the drill spin when the vehicle is moved. It’s a fun play feature, especially as the two unique elements used for the drill both rotate in opposite directions. The cab of the Drillster can be detached to create Dr Robotnik’s trademark hover egg vehicle. It’s a fun build and has neat little details, especially the way the drill moves.

Shadow the Hedgehog spent his early life in the lab where he was created. He was brought into the world by Dr Robotnik’s grandfather and then kept hidden by the military. The lab where Shadow was born is featured in the set. This scenery section features a small workshop area, decorated with various trinkets including a printed screen showing Shadow and his friend, Maria Robotnik. To the right of the lab workshop, is a wall which can be smashed apart. There are five sections of wall which are mounted on a line of jumper plates, making them easy to knock down.

As with other Sonic sets, this one includes a Speed Sphere. This unique play function was created to represent the gameplay of the Sonic games. The Speed Sphere is made of two parts, the launcher and the Speed Sphere pod. Both of these parts use a unique shell element. The set introduces a new colour, with a transparent yellow speed sphere used to match Super Sonic’s appearance. A minifigure can be slotted into the speed sphere, which can then be launched by sitting it in the launcher and smashing down on it, to send it flying

Robotnik’s obsession with machines extends to his mechanical minions. These are often used to both bother Sonic and entrap various animal critters. The Egg Pawn Badnik has appeared in various games but debuted in Sonic Heroes. It’s a dumpy humanoid robot, with an egg-shaped body. In LEGO form, its printed dome can be flipped up to reveal Pecky. It’s joined by a Gun Wing, which is a drone-like device used by G.U.N. It’s been repurposed and now houses Pocky, which is found in the drone’s onboard container. It’s mounted on a transparent stand to give the impression of it flying.

The set features three minifigures including the debut of Super Sonic. This yellow variant of Sonic first appeared in Sonic 2 and was the result of Sonic harnessing the power of all seven Chaos Emeralds. The result is a powered-up, yellow version of the Blue Blue. The minifigure isn’t merely a yellow version of Sonic. It uses a unique head element and a yellow torso and legs. Super Sonic is joined by Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow has previously been featured in a set, but this one features a different expression, making it unique. Dr Robotnik (or Eggman) was once a brick-built character when he appeared in the LEGO Ideas Sonic set, but has since become a minifigure. This uses a unique body section with longer minifigure legs. It’s the same version that’s featured in past sets. (please note Sonic is not included in this set)

Despite the mismatched content from several Sonic games, they combine nicely to provide an overall fun set. The Drillster is interesting to build, especially the little gear system connected to the working driller. The big draw of the set will be the Super Sonic minifigure. It’s nice to see the various waves of Sonic sets introducing fan-favourite characters. The Super Sonic vs. Egg Drillster set will be available from August 1st.
