76992: Amy’s Animal Rescue Island Set Review

Over the years, Sonic has been joined by many new friends in his various gaming adventures. Following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog, a sequel was created which acted as the debut for Sonic’s flying fox friend, Miles Prower or Tails as he is better known. When Sonic 2 was released on the Mega Drive, Tails became a playable character. Soon after Sonic 2 arrived on the Mega Drive, SEGA released an add-on device for the console called Sega CD. This acted as the debut for the self-proclaimed love interest of Sonic, who was a pink hedgehog called Amy Rose. Both Tails and Amy have gone on to star in a number of other Sonic titles, they are also included in this upcoming LEGO® Sonic the Hedgehog set. Continuing my look at the new Sonic sets, here’s a closer look at Amy’s Animal Rescue Island.

Unlike some of the other LEGO Sonic sets, this is a more self-contained build, which is focused on a single location. That location is Amy’s island which has been turned into a paradise for the many little critters rescued by Sonic. There are various areas on this little island area, these include a small waterfall which runs into a little pool. Underneath a juice bar is a hidden room, which can be accessed by opening a hidden door on the front of the set or from the open area at the back.

There is also a little bridge which uses recoloured vehicle tracks. This can be collapsed by a little handle hidden around the back of the set. The use of this element perfectly captures the appearance of the bridges from the games. Another hidden play feature can be found in the watery area to the right of the set. A small rocky mount can be smashed open with Amy’s hammer to reveal a Choas Elemald. You can collect others from the rest of the LEGO Sonic sets.

Although Sonic doesn’t make an appearance in the set, two of his best friends do. Both Tails and Amy are brand-new minifigure characters, which means they feature newly created elements. For Tails, that’s the head and Tails’ two tails and for Amy, it’s just her head. It’s often tricky to recreate certain animated characters into minifigures, but these work well and I particularly like Amy’s head. But these aren’t the only characters featured in the set. There’s a brick-built version of a Crabmeat Badnik, which has been updated compared to the version found in the Sonic Ideas set. As with all Badnik bots, the design allows for animals to be placed in them similar to how they are trapped inside the enemies in the games. Speaking of animals, the set includes three of them – Picky the pig, Pocky the rabbit and Flicky the bird. The little critters are similar to the animal figures found in the LEGO Friends sets. Tails and Amy both have buildable accessories including Amy’s heart hammer and for some reason, Tails has a hoverboard, despite being able to float around by spinning his tails.

Overall

The set has a decent amount of detail built into it, I particularly enjoyed the play features. These are nicely incorporated into the build and seem to be there just for the sake of it. I’m not entirely sure why the LEGO Sonic sets have such a heavy focus on incorporating places to relax but at least there’s somewhere for the animal critter to enjoy. As mentioned, the minifigures do a great job of capturing the look at both characters, whilst also feeling like a minifigure.
