76297: Dancing Groot Set Review

Before 2014, the Guardians of the Galaxy were practically unknown but their fun-filled intergalactic adventures soon cemented them as an important part of the MCU. But one member of the team has become particularly beloved. The Flora Colossus is also known as Groot. Although Groot becomes a little less colossal, he remains a fan-favourite Guardian. Groot has appeared in a few different LEGO® sets including buildable versions of the character. Now he returns in a different form and he’s ready to dance. Here’s a closer look at the upcoming LEGO Marvel Dancing Groot.

After the events of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the team is saved by the sacrifice of Groot. But that wasn’t the end of Groot and some of his remains were potted by Rocket. A new incarnation of Groot was born and in the closing movies of the first Guardians film, he is seen grooving to a Jackson 5 song. It’s this version of Groot which has inspired this new set.

As in the film Groot, is potted and that’s where the build begins. The pot is not merely a decorative solution for Groot to sit in, it hides an impressive gear system which enables Groot to groove. Turning a handle on the rear of the pot causes Groot’s body to twist and shake similar to the dancing flowers from the ’90s. The mechanism to move Groot is mostly hidden with the pot although two ball joints bars are visible as they connected further up Groot’s body. It would have been nice if these were brown instead of the standard black but they don’t ruin the aesthetics of the set too much.

The pot is also used to store some elements that can be added to Groot to change his appearance. Along with a trio of plates which feature the Guardians of the Galaxy and I Am Groot logos plus one features the film title in an alien font. Each of these can be affixed to the front of the pot. These are created through stickered pieces, with additional stickers being used on different parts of Groot’s body. You’ll also notice a seemingly odd notch on the left edge of the pot. This is a place to store Groot’s headphones.

The build of Groot is interesting as it needs to be loose enough to move freely when the handle is turned but also stay connected. So sections of his body are pieced together via different methods such as Technic pins and bar plates. Admittedly, much of this is still visible when the set is viewed from the rear but any further means to disguise this would affect the functionality of the set.

When the set is complete, you can add various accessories to Groot, these include shades, headphones and flowering spouts. They are a fun addition to the set, but I prefer Groot in his natural form. It’s not a cheap set but its price point is similar to the previous versions of Groot and does make a fun display piece.
