With the Avengers assembled and the Battle for New York in full swing, Loki’s Chitauri forces step up their attack with the massive Leviathan creatures. That moment is the inspiration for one of the smaller of the new LEGO® Marvel Summer sets. As the name of the set suggests, it features some of the Avengers and a Leviathan. Here’s an early look at the new LEGO Marvel set, The Avengers vs. The Leviathan.

After unleashing the alien forces upon Manhattan, Loki proceeds to bring down the Avengers by using the Mind Stone to control them. His plan soon falls flat but not before a giant cybernetically augmented creature joins the fray. These large flying creatures are best described as whale-like snakes. Since debuting in The Avengers, they have made various other appearances across the MCU.
This isn’t the first time the Leviathan has appeared in a LEGO set. In fact, the version in this set is extremely similar to the version from the Avengers Tower. However, it’s not exactly the same. This version has a few tweaks and adds a pair of stud shooters to the head of the creature. It also offers a different display option in the form of two short transparent stands. It has the same base build which offers a good level of movement so can be posed in different ways.
The set features an impressive line-up of Minifigures and although it suggests the Avengers are onboard, it’s not the entire gang. Instead, three of the original Avengers can be found in the set. They include Black Widow, Captain America and the Hulk. These are all the same versions of the characters featured in the Avengers Tower set and some of the other upcoming Marvel sets. Hulk does have a different expression, but the over BigFig is the same. I would say Captain America should have been dropped in favour of Hawkeye. I know he’s a popular character but Clint makes more sense in respect of the moment the set represents.
As with the Avengers members, the Chitauri figure is also the same as recent versions and that’s partly the same for Loki. Although most of the minifigure matches that of past sets, like his brother, Loki has received a cape upgrade. Instead of the classic style material capes, the god of mischief has a new moulded one. It’s the same as Thor’s just in green. They do look and sit better than the material capes but do lack flexibility.
It would be easy to merely describe this set taking a small part of the Avengers Tower set and repackaging it as a new set. In essence, that’s exactly what it is. The Leviathan is very similar to the version from The aforementioned set but it does offer a few minor differences. If nothing else, the set offers a far cheaper way to obtain some of the more detailed versions of the Avengers characters.
