Thor’s journey in the MCU has been an interesting one. After the first two Thor films, the third embraces the absurdity of a race of alien gods with Thor: Ragnarok. In the opening moments of the film, Thor is found chained in a cage, captured by the fire demon Surtur. The prophecy that Asgard would fall during Ragnarok came true as Surtur was released and rained terror on Thor’s world. It’s those moments which has inspired this new LEGO® Marvel Infinity Saga set.

The set is dubbed a ‘construction figure’ but it’s nothing like the other Marvel buildable figures. For one it’s far smaller than those figures and its construction is similar to the smaller mechs that the construction figures. Surtur has plenty of jointed connection points offering plenty of posing options. To replicate Surtur’s fiery aura, there’s print detail on the quarter dome plates used on his chest. Surtur’s head reuses and recolours the head previously used for Domo in the Eternals sets. This is combined with a second piece to represent his horns. This can be detached as Thor does in the film.
The Marvel sets have become a lot more dynamic in recent times. The use of ‘power’ effects and transparent elements to recreate superpowers has made sets a lot more exciting. Thor’s ability to throw Mjölnir and manipulate lightning is shown through a transparent blue ‘flame’ element and the use of transparent rods. These can also be attached to Surtar for plenty of display options.
The set includes three minifigures, two of them are fire demons, which use the body of a skeleton but in demonic black. Despite being demons, their flame-licked heads offer a cheeky, menacing expression over an evil one. Thor has had quite the ‘glow up’ over the years of appearing in LEGO sets. His latest version features a torso which represents the outfit he wore in Ragnarok. His head is the same used for some of the recent versions. But the big change is a new moulded cape. Although it’s a little more rigid compared to the material ones, it does look quite nice. I quite like the new cape, although they would look odd against material ones.
I like how the Marvel theme is continuing to delve into past MCU adventures to inspire new sets. With over 10 years of stories to use, the Marvel sets can offer moments previously overlooked when sets connected to various films were released. This set is a great example of that. I like the new design of Thor and the moulded cape. The Thor vs. Surtur Construction Figure will be available from August 1st.
